Tips of the Week (14): Tips for teaching idioms in class Part II Hi! Welcome to Tips of the Week! This week, I would like to share two more activities that teachers can use when teaching idioms. One can be used as a fun game for students to play in class, and the other will encourage students to creatively use idioms in speech and writing. Idiom card game Procedure: 1. Select ten idioms that you have taught in class or want students to learn. 2. Students work in groups of four or five. Each group prepares 20 cards or slips of paper. 3. Write each idiom on a card. Then write definitions for each idioms on the other 10 cards. 4. Shuffle the cards of idioms and the cards of definitions separately and place them face down in two piles on a desk. 5. In each group, students take turns to turn two cards (one from each pile) over to showthe writing. Read them out loud. If they match, the student keeps the two cards. If not, the student turns the cards over and the next person takes aturn. 6. The student with the most matches at the end of the game is the winner. This game can help to reinforce students memory of the meaning of idioms. Each time a student turns over two cards, all students in the group will think about them eaning of the idiom to see if they match. It can be a five-minute game for students to have fun with
idioms. Creating a dialogue with idiomsand presenting in class Procedure: 1. Students work in pairs on an assignment afterclass. Write a short script of an encounter between colleagues or hotel staffand a guest. Use at least five common idioms, either the ones they have learnedin class or new idioms they learn outside of class. 2. Bring the script to class the following weekand role-play the dialogue in class. 3. Students teach the new idioms used in thedialogue to classmates. 4. Teachers give feedback and comments onstudents performance. This activityis a good way to encourage students to take initiative in learning new idioms.they are expected to put the idioms in appropriate context, create dialogues and role-play. And sometimes when teachers give the stage to students and let them teach their classmates some new information, it will ignite students enthusiasm in study. Tips for teachers 1. Deal with idioms when they crop up in their contexts, such as in readingand listening tasks, or when you use one naturally in class. 2. Use visuals and pictures related to the idioms to help students rememberthem. 3. Some English idioms have similar expressions in Chinese. It can help students to remember the meaning if they learn the similarity between English and Chinese expressions. 4. Don t overload students with too many idioms at one time. Five is probably a good number for one
class. If you have good ideas or suggestions about using idioms in class, please share them with us. If you have any comments or questions about the CHEIHospitality English workbook, please feel free to post them any time on WeChat or send an email to me at ctc@chei.org. We look forward to hearing from you! 微 信 扫 一 扫 关 注 该 公 众 号
