Social support for gynecologic cancer patients receiving postoperative adjuvant therapy Sumiko Kawanaka 1, Nao Saito 2, Ikuko Miyawaki 2 Abstract In order to enable gynecologic cancer patients receiving postoperative adjuvant therapy to utilize appropriate support and cope with treatment, this study aimed to clarify what kind of support such patients receive and from whom. Semi-structured interviews based on Kahn s social support classification were conducted on patients being seen on an outpatient basis after completion of or during postoperative adjuvant therapy following hysterectomy. The interviews were analyzed using Mayring s qualitative content analysis. This study was conducted with the approval of the ethical review board of health sciences. The 15 gynecologic cancer patients enrolled in this study were receiving support during postoperative adjuvant therapy from their husbands, fellow patients, doctors, nurses, family, friends and neighbors. The patients were receiving nine types of support that included emotional support (being listened to, being understood, and receiving encouragement), positive support (being accepted, being agreed with, and being acknowledged), and support through aid (being informed, being supported in daily life during therapy, and being supported in family life). This assessment of the types of support suggested the necessity of nursing support that promoted awareness of social support suitable for patients.
