(i.e. Onin, carrt, green beans, celery, spinach, lettuce, sunflwers, crn, radishes, cucumber, tmat and s n. Teachers will chse 4-5 kinds, depending n the time when this mdule is taught and the availability f these seeds in a supermarket.) Students will select a plant and grw these seeds while they keep a lg recrding hw they take care f the plant and the prgress f the plant s grwth. They will understand that it takes a lng time fr seeds t grw int mature plants because they have t turn water, sunlight, air, and sil int nutrients. Meanwhile, students will study the cnditins fr different plants t grw. They will discver that plants have differing needs fr water, sunlight, air/temperature, and type f sil, s the envirnment in which they live is imprtant fr them. They will understand that plants and ther living things interact with ne anther and als with the envirnment t frm a fd chain, in which each plays an imprtant rle. At the end, students will make their wn salad/dish by using different parts f plants and telling their audience in what kind f envirnment the selected items f their salad live. They will reprt n the grwth f their wn plants. Befre they take hme their plants, students will make a pledge t take care f the plant. General Plant Organizatin Facts Scientists believe there are ver 260,000 species f plants. Sme plants are s small they can barely be seen. Others are taller than peple r animals. Sme f the largest living plants n the earth are the sequia trees f Califrnia. Sme stand ver 290 feet (88 meters) high and measure ver 30 feet (9 meters) wide. 4

They are the primary prducers that sustain all ther life frms. This is s because plants are the nly rganisms that can make their wn fd. Unlike animal cells, plants have an additinal cell wall made frm cellulse. The cellulse enables plants t stand upright withut the aid f an internal r external skeletn. Animals, incapable f making their wn fd, depend directly r indirectly n plants fr their supply f fd. All animals and the fds they eat can be traced back t plants. The Sht and Rt Systems Plants have tw rgan systems (grups f rgans that perfrm related functins), the sht system and the rt system. The sht system is abve grund and includes the rgans such as leaves, buds, stems, flwers, and fruits (if the plant has them). The rt system includes thse parts f the plant belw grund, such as the rts, tubers (swllen undergrund stems in plants that stre fd, such as the ptat), and rhizmes (a hrizntal stem with upright leaves cntaining specialized tissues fr transprting fluids and nutrients in plants). Vascular plants have systems f tubes (xylem and phlem) fr the transprt f nutrients and water. There is a wide variety f plants n Earth and even a whle grup that desn't have vascular systems. Msses and liverwrts may still have phtsynthesis, but they d nt have the typical plant structure. The tip (terminal bud) f the main stem has a specialized structure that is the surce f new grwth fr plants. Yu will find the apical meristem that develps int yung leaves. There are ther pints f grwth at each nde where leaves and branches develp n the stems. Thse branching pints are hme t axillary buds that can als develp int new branches. Rts are designed t pull water and minerals frm whatever material the plant sits n. Fr water plants, the rts may be in the water. Fr trees, the rts g deep int the sil. There are even plants called epiphytes that live in trees and their rt system clings t branches. Humans ften rely n the rts f plants fr fd. Carrts are just ne big range rt. Rt hairs are als a cmmn structure n rts. They make the rts lk fuzzy and help in the absrptin f water and nutrients. Plants and Their Envirnment Plants require a reasnable level f heat t grw. The mst favrable temperature at which phtsynthesis takes place ranges frm near freezing t 20 t 25 C (70 t 80 F). The rates f phtsynthesis and respiratin increase with rising temperatures, temperatures abve r belw these levels limit plant grwth. The climate f a regin determines what types f plants can survive in that regin. A plant's envirnment is made up f many factrs. One f the mst imprtant is the weather sunlight, temperature, and precipitatin (rain, melted snw, and ther misture). Sil and ther plants and animals that live in the same area are als included in the envirnment f a plant. All these factrs frm what is called a natural cmmunity. 5
