It claim s that buyu can be classified into two categories, i. e., secondary p redication and post2posing adverbial. The former p redicates the subject or the object after the p rimary p redication, and the latter modifies the p redicate as adverbs, adpositional phrases or temporal and verbal classifiers. Key words: syntactic constituent, buyu, secondary p redication, post2posing adverbial DO NG X iufang, Syn tactic change and lex ica liza tion in Ch inese This paper p roposes that some diachronic lexicalizations be induced by syntactic changes of, e. g., content words, functional words and word order changes. However, syntactic changes are not necessary for the occurrence of lexicalization. The differences between syntactically relevant lexicalization and syntactically irrelevant lexicalization are also discussed.
