SCHOOL OF COUNSELING Training Workshop on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) This Workshop will provide an overview of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with special focus on a case formulation approach and interventions such self-monitoring, relaxation training, systematic desensitization, flooding or exposure, reinforcement procedures, stress-inoculation training or coping skills training, cognitive restructuring, problem-solving, and behavior rehearsal (including social skills training). Mindfulness- and acceptance-based approaches (i.e., Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)), will be briefly covered. A Biblical approach, a critique of CBT and the use of inner healing prayer and Scripture will be presented. Rev Dr Tan Siang Yang, PhD, serves as Senior Pastor of First Evangelical Church Glendale and Professor of Psychology at Fuller Theological Seminary (USA). He is also a clinical psychologist who has authored numerous books and journal articles on counseling and psychology. His latest book is a major textbook, Tan, S. Y. (2011). SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY TCA College has online modules for both undergraduate and graduate programs. All interested students can watch a video introduction available at the TCA College website. Students who wish to raise further questions should attend the academic advising sessions on Feb 18 at 3.30pm at TCA College. Frequently Asked Questions Q: Who should register for online modules? A: The modules are open to all students who have not completed the course in their program of study. Interested students should have reliable internet access and be comfortable with computers and online technology. Selfdiscipline is key as students will be expected to commit a minimum of 7-8 hours/week to personal study. Q: What learning activities are parts of the module? A: Students will be required to complete weekly readings (from the module textbook and other materials), engage in activities based on readings, and participate in forum discussions. Students must plan their schedule to complete these learning activities within the specified week. The module may also include term papers that must be submitted at the end of the module. Q: How will I be assessed? A: Students will be assessed based on the weekly activities, forum discussions, and term paper(s). There will be no end-of-term examinations for online modules. Q: Must I come to campus for any classes? A: Coming to campus is not required since students will have access to online journals through the TCA College library webpage. However, students may wish to make use of the TCA College library for additional resources. 12
