327 A Follow-up Study on the Legend of Darkness Shouhua Liu Abstract The Legend of Darkness, a folk songbook in circulation in Shennongjia, a region in the southwest of Hubei Province that holds China s largest remaining stands of primary forest, narrates the legendary ancient history of the Han people, centering on Pangu s separation of heaven and earth and ending of chaos and darkness. It is mainly performed by folk singers as a funeral drum song. In the early 1980 s, the author s appraisal of the Legend of Darkness as the mythological epic of the Han People was greeted with a warm response. During extensive follow-up research over subsequent years, the author has made new discoveries regarding the epic s text and singing customs, but also revealed profound secrets about its structure through comparison with such popular works of Ming fiction as Legends from Pangu to Tangyu. An accurate picture of this treasured folktale, which has long been a focus of interest in academic circles, can at last be presented to the world. Keywords: Shennongjia, Legend of Darkness, funeral drum songs, Pangu, mythological epic * Shouhua Liu is director of the Folk Culture Research Center at Huazhong Normal University.
