2 General Education and Our Future: The Development of General Education at Van Nung Institute of Technology- Where We Stand and Where We Want to Be Chen-Hsiung Hsu Associate professorcenter for General Education Van Nung Institute of Technology Abstract Is general education important or not? The importance can be found in the promotion of general education and in the establishment of centers for general education or committees for common courses by the universities. And in the recent years, general education is also available in those institutes of technology and technology universities that used to be junior colleges. In the era that information and biology technologies are prominent, we are pleased to see that the ideal of general education is still not neglected by the universities. However, in the process of practicing general education, are human qualities improved? Is the contemplation of the relationships among mankind, society, and nature more thorough? Or, is it drowned deeper and perished in sin? Is it more difficult to comprehend human thinking and behavior? This article starts with the discussions of humanities versus technology, and expertise versus versatility. It clarifies that the common quality of humanities and technology centers on the human being. Overemphasis on any specialized knowledge will misinterpret general education. Yet expertise and versatility are not mutually exclusive, because the acquisition of knowledge implies the result of education. Moreover, general education is the education of humanities, it should be put in practice equally regardless of the types of schools. At last, some recommendations will be provided on the basis of current state and future plan of general education at Van Nung Institute of Technology.
