1. English learning English Enhancement Scheme The English enhancement scheme saw another fruitful year. Not only were the eight activities duly implemented, but some were also somewhat perfected by having more cooperation with other departments. For example, the Teaching in China program was combined with the S6 leadership training where the skills were applied in Qing Yuan classrooms. A variation of the program took 20 students to Yuhigaoka High School, Osaka, Japan for five days where students from both schools exchanged cultures and English learning experiences. The Sound of Music, our second musical, was well received in all four shows among primary students, secondary students, parents, teachers and principals of other schools. Unlike in last year, no professional assistance was employed; all teachers and clerical staff members helped out in the musical. Students reflections on the learning in the musical were printed in the Young Post, and were re-printed in our latest issue of Writing Club, the departmental literature. Other Language Achievements English learning experience included two inter-house junior form English quiz shows which helped students revise for their upcoming examinations. S3 students and the matriculation classes had their first English debates respectively. S3 students also hosted an English Fair booth at a function organized by the Association of Hong Kong Chinese Middle Schools. They applied their history knowledge to designing English games for 1000 booth visitors. S6 students participated in the Think Again Awards documentary-making competition, winning the crown award the THINK AGAIN AWARD, one distinction and six merits. The English corner also held regular lunch activities, to name but a few. Professional Developments Our English teachers participated in a HKU QEF project entitled Peer and self assessment as tools to develop students oral communication strategies on aligning assessment with curriculum reform in junior secondary English language teaching. Among many schools, LFH s project was one of the six chosen to present findings and implications. Other teachers were invited to speak in EDB seminars on planning for new senior secondary English curriculum. Our teachers also shared our language programs with two schools on how classroom and non-classroom times were spent wisely for language learning, in addition to all online English reading and games recommended to students. Coming Years While more English input allows students to learn the language in a more organized and enjoyable way, we have not forgotten the importance of balancing examination needs and everyday use. It is our mission to see to it that while some students continue with their academic path in S6 and universities, others choose to experience the language first hand in the work environment. We are committed to providing an English program which helps students to excel in both study and work. - 2 -
