In the history of poetry qing is an open aesthetic concept with a wide range of meaning and strong derivative ability. Further probing and study of the development and connota2 tions of this concept is an important subject in the research of classic poetry. (14) A Survey of thecainozoicpoetry in the 1940s L ong Q uanming 158 A comprehensive analysis is made in t his paper of t he background, changes, aest hetic tendency, historical contribution and limitations of thecainozoicpoetry in the 1940s. The author opines that thecainozoic poetry shook off the external oppression and broke through the restrictions of tradition2 al literary creation, and made bold explorations and innovation, taking a big st ride forward towards modernization ofnew poetry. It was integrated into the modern world trend and linked closely with social realities and poetic traditions in China. It could be said that thecainozoic poetrywas a symbol of vigorous develop ment of Chinese new poet ry amidst difficulties and a symbol of general break2 t hrough and mat urity of modern Chinese poet ry. It s value and significance should not be underestimat2 ed. This paper thoroughly refutes this view. According to the paper, China was a traditional agricultural society, if there had been theeconomic revolution during the Song dynasty it would have been embodied as anagricultural revolution south of the Yangtze River. In terms of economic growth pattern, although there were important progress south of the Yangtze River during the Song dynasty, there was no change that could be so important that it could be called arev2 olution. So theagricultural revolution south of the Yangtze River during the Song dynastywas just amirror image. This falsehood was rooted in methodology as reflected bychoosing the refined and collecting the essential. Both methods mistook the specific and particular phenomena as the universal and drew the wrong conclusion. It is therefore an urgent task now to sum up the previous methods. (16) Controversy over the Promulgation of the Provisional Constitution and the Incident of Chiang Ka i2shek Putting Hu Hanmin under House Arrest Yang Tianshi 193 Chiang Kai2shek put Hu Hanmin under house arrest in February 1932. This was no doubt a strong earthquake in Nanjing politics and a typical event signaling the enhancement of Chiang s mili2 tary dictatorship and had great repercussions. The vestige of democratic at mosp here wit hin t he Kuom2 intang regime in Nanjing had now vanished. The cont radictions between Chiang and Hu were compli2 cated and multifold. Not understanding modern democracy and politics and taking Dr. Sun Yat2sen s last teaching to extremes, Hu Hanmin opposed the Provisional Constitution and at the same time tried to restrict Chiang by means of modern system of balance of power. On the other hand, Chiang tried to put up an appearance of democracy and rule by law, but when he encountered check and opposition, he wantonly t rampled on t he principles of democracy. 208
