1 園 長 的 話 1 園 長 的 話 Director's Words 2014 Annual Report Of Taipei Zoo 2014100 Learning from Life 10 4 19 1986 100 5000 103 9 2014 10 25 30 22 SEAZA SEAZA 2014 was the 100 th Anniversary of the establishment of the Zoo. Gathering the forces from within and outside the Zoo, our best tribute to this centennial milestone was the fruitful achievements from the aspects of animal conservation, domestic and international cooperation, environmental education, cultural and historical compilation, and carnival activities with the focus of Learning from Life. When looking back at all the scale of efforts the ancestors and colleagues have put in to build and create, apart from being thankful, we have to shoulder the mission of heading towards the future sustainable development of the Zoo. Starting from the beginning of the year until the celebratory series of events for the Zoo s centennial anniversary in October, the Zoo s rich, diverse, and timeless momentum was displayed. Century Ark, Happy Voyage is a parade on April 19 th with the themes of animal conservation, educational promotion, and partnerships. Led by the Mayor, we replicated the great migration route in 1986 from Yuanshan to Muzha and also invited all the citizens to participate so as to reproduce the grand occasion back then and to celebrate the 100 th birthday of the Zoo together. At the same time, the completion of A Century of Taipei Zoo 1914-2014, by maneuvering through the 5000+ historical data, documents, images, oral dictations, and other content that laid a foundation since the Yuanshan period, the evolutional course of the statuses and roles during the different periods of the Zoo was recorded and retained in detail. In addition to the value of professional heritage, these are also important historical materials of the Zoo s development. At the starting point of heading towards the next century, Taipei Zoo also clearly understood the international trend of conservation and cooperation must continue to move forward. In order to establish and advance wildlife conservation techniques and actions, the cooperation with international zoos have been expanded. In addition to dispatching personnel to nine countries, including the USA, this year to participate in international seminars and professional annual meetings, we are even actively training the colleagues in their ability to international affairs. In addition to handling The 2014 International Conference for the Reintroduction of the Endangered Species, from October 25 th to 30 th, overlapping with the Zoo s celebratory events, The 22 nd South East Asian Zoos Association (SEAZA) Annual Conference was handled. The theme of the SEAZA Annual Conference was One Plan Approach (Conservation Integration) and professionals from the zoo community of 22 nations carried out discussions on the sustainable cooperation and resource integration for cross-border and transnational wildlife populations and jointly paid attention to the integration actions for the repopulation of endangered species. During the evening of SEAZA Annual Conference s opening ceremony, under the witness of all the participants, cooperation agreements were signed respectively with Zoo Leipzig of Germany and Osaka Municipal Tennoji Zoo of Japan. 1 Director's Words 2 3

1 園 長 的 話 2014 Annual Report Of Taipei Zoo One Plan Approach 22 SEAZA EAZAGorilla EEP Somali Wild Ass EEP 3 9 27 16 135 6 Google+ APP Knowing deeply that close-knit partnerships are needed for conservation work and after long-term efforts of promoting domestic and international cross-unit cooperation, we obtained the support and affirmation of many units during the occasion of the Zoo s centennial anniversary and officially launched the cross-unit cooperation of Taiwan Region Orangutan Population Management Plan within Taiwan. On the grounds of heading towards the cooperation and development of orangutan management within the Asian region, the consensus of regional animal species management was cohered and the new opportunity for conservation cooperation was opened. Moreover, European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) even passed the Zoo in joining the Gorilla European Endangered species Programme (Gorilla EEP) and Somali Wild Ass Endangered species Programme (Somali Wild Ass EEP). We successfully introduced red pandas to prevent mating among kinship, poison dart frogs, Chinese leopard cats, ruddy kingfisher, etc., were introduced. We successfully artificial-fed and took care of conserved species, such as three injured baby Eurasian otters that were saved in Kinmen and Formosan pangolins. Not only did we obtain dazzling results in the renewal of animal kinship and educational displays, we also displayed the comprehensive results of the conservation cooperation internationally and within and outside the field once and again. Although the conservation results were dazzling, how the conservation results and philosophies can go deep inside the visitors hearts through the dynamic and static displays, whereby linking to linking to life activities relies on the implementation and promotion of environmental education. Following the reopening of Bird World Waterfowl Area on September 27 th of this year (2014) for visitation, 16 species, a total of 135 birds, were displayed, and visitors can observe waterfowls closely. The exhibition areas of Formosan pangolins and Chinese leopard cats, which linked animal habits and conservation stories, transformed the Formosan Animal Area into an explanation stage for local animal conservational education. The Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Achievements Exhibition, which was introduced in June, exhibited both adult and baby animals at the same time and is an achievement exhibition of the years of conservation breeding at the Zoo. Modern Ark used animal specimen and multimedia interactive explanatory facilities to build a learning center combining the Zoo and regional conservation. In addition to the substantial educational explanatory display, we even added Google+ Pages and Love Taipei APP Love Going to Zoo online services for the first time this year so as to draw near to the national internet marketing trends and launch a new conservation education phase. These efforts and results of promoting environmental education also helped the Zoo to win the Premium Award for the 3 rd Taipei City Environmental Education Award, Agency (Institution) Group. We thank all the partners for their efforts, and with the steps of the efforts and results of the ancestors, we have also left a diverse and exciting track for this special moment. Looking ahead into the future, we should be even more humble and learn from all life and actively find comrades under the foundation of conservation to expand the cooperation network. We should be open-minded to let those who care to also participate in an open and transparent way so as to deepen the intensity of cooperation, exercise our professionalism in wildlife conservation and education, and place efforts in heading towards the important base of conservation and education and towards the development for the next century.
