LONG RANGE RECONNAISSANCE PATROL PHOTOS PART 2 OF 3: LRP, 1967-1968 VIETNAM - As the war in Southeast Asia progressed and value of LRRP units (Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol) was proven time and time again, the U.S. Army started to formalize them and created two company sized units to fulfill the need for ground reconnaissance. This gave rise to the LRP units, the Long Range Patrol units. The first two were formed to support the I and II Field Forces in September of 1967. Company E (Long Range Patrol), 20th Infantry (Airborne) was assigned to the I Field Force and was formed by taking the LRRP platoon of the 1st Brigade 101st Airborne Division and volunteers from the replacement stream. Company F (Long Range Patrol), 51st Infantry (Airborne) was assigned to the II Field Force based in Bien Hoa and formed from the LRRP platoon of the 173rd Airborne Brigade and replacement volunteers. By the end of 1967 all LRRP units had been renamed with company designators, renamed LRP units and authorized 118 men for LRP units supporting divisions and 61 men for LRP detachments supporting separate brigades.
