She asked the attendant how often that happened and was told, "Dozens of times each day." Mrs. Coolidge said, "Tell that to the President when he comes by." Extracts of sweat: either acceleration or delay M.C. 雌 性 亦 透 過 費 落 蒙 相 互 影 響, 月 經 週 期 的 同 步 與 嗅 覺 訊 息 有 關, 譬 如 把 腋 下 之 汗 溶 於 酒 精, 放 於 雌 性 的 群 體 中, 會 導 致 生 理 週 期 之 同 步 Major histocompatibility complex (MHC): A group of immune-related genes. Polymorphism-many different alleles. Source of unique body odors: signal individual s genotype. Women prefer the smell of men with MHCs not too similar to their own but also not too dissimilar (preferably containing parts of father s MHC). Vomeronasal organ is needed? Nonfunctional vestige ( 痕 跡 器 官 ) in humans. But the main olfactory system can detect MHC-related odors & pheromones. Parenting Copulation is not enough to ensure reproduction: Precocial ( 早 熟 性 的 ) : born in a relatively developed state and able to survive without maternal care, e.g., chicken, horse. Altricial ( 晚 成 性 的 ): born in an undeveloped state and depends on maternal care, e.g., human. Rat mothers (dams) show 4 easily measured maternal behaviors: Nest building, crouching over pups, retrieving pups, and nursing. Virgin female rats find the smell of pups aversive. Parabiotic exchange: surgical preparation joins two animals to share a single blood supply ( 有 福 同 享 有 難 同 當 through hormones in the blood). Promoting maternal behavior requires estrogens, progesterone, and prolactin. 刺 激 mpoa: oral maternal behaviors: licking and pup retrieval. 刺 激 Periaqueductal gray (PAG): crouching position for nursing pups. Testosterone also acts on epithelial ( 上 皮 ) tissue: form the prostate gland ( 前 列 腺 ), scrotum ( 陰 囊 ), penis ( 陰 莖 ) aided by dihydrotestosterone ( 二 氫 睪 固 酮 DHT, a more potent androgen). 19 Testosterone (睪固酮) vs. Estradiol (雌二醇) } } } Big puzzle: newborn female rats 給予低劑量estradiol可以造成常久及成年期雄性化的 行為 (masculinity) even though fetus receives estrogen from mother. 兩者在結構上非常相似: } T is the precursor for the manufacture of estradiol in the ovary. } Aromatization (芳香轉化作用 via enzyme aromatase): converts T to E and androgens to other estrogens. } Aromatization hypothesis: testicular androgens enter the brain and are converted there into estrogens to masculinize the developing nervous system of some rodents. } α-fetoprotein: binds estrogens (but not testosterone) and prevents them from entering the brain. } e.g., unusual sexual differentiation of the spotted hyena (Box 12.1 hermaphrodites: 雌雄同體). In primates (including human), aromatization does not seem to play a role in masculinization of the nervous system (回顧 AIS cases).
