12 I. My Beliefs The Invitational Education theories are conducive to a paradigm shift in both learning and teaching. In the traditional school setting, teachers focus on teaching rather than what students have learned. Students need to adapt themselves to the system which lays emphasis on rules and uniformity. Eventually, students uniqueness, creativity and needs are often undermined, neglected and worse still, sacrificed. The tag of academic losers and social misfits are stuck to them for the rest of their lives. Invitational Education (IE) which was founded by American educational scholars William Purkey and Betty Siegel aims to invite educators, teachers, parents or even policy makers to redefine and revaluate their roles in the growing-up process of teenagers. We teachers, as one of the stakeholders, should take the initiative in providing a suitable learning environment for our students to explore their unique potential. Through the interaction of 5P Factors, namely, People, Places, Policies, Programmes and Processes, we strive to intentionally create appropriate curricula and learning activities to realize their talents. With Respect, Trust, Optimism and Care, all educational activities should be planned deliberately in a way that students can develop their untapped possibilities. Only by doing so can students show appreciation, gain self-esteem and see themselves as valuable members of society. They will finally be able to contribute to Hong Kong, China and the world at large. II. My Practices With the above vision, students needs are always the focal point of my curriculum planning. Instead of asking myself How much have I taught?, How much have my students learned? should be the question which revolves around the whole planning process. Only when students are able to conceptualize and expand their knowledge through various activities will they be able to sustain life-long learning. I have strived to make the learning activities work in line with the above belief and the 5Ps in IE. People People are always the heart of Invitational Education. Bearing in mind that Every child has dignity; Every child is able to learn; Every child is able to succeed, my school has developed FACE Education which is in response to the inner voice of humanity in every child. They are not faceless but unique valuable creatures. FACE Education revolves around four directions, namely, Fit Education, Autonomous Education, Critical Dialogue Relationship and Excellent Education. As one of the contributors to FACE Education, I have become involved in the following: 12

13 Establishing the Multiple Intelligence & Invitational Education Committee (MIE) The MIE Committee was first set up in 2002 to plan, implement and monitor the development of IE in all aspects of school matters. As the chairperson of the MIE, I have tried to assist colleagues in having a more comprehensive understanding of the philosophy of IE. The new MIE members are usually given a workshop about IE at the beginning of the school year. All teachers are cordially invited to attend different IE workshops to share and reflect upon how IE has been implemented at school. For instance, all teachers attended the 2005 IAIE Leadership Institute and we were all impressed by the talks given by the various speakers at the Institute. We were also involved in the school visit during the Institute and the feedback we received from both the overseas and local visitors has highly enlightened and encouraged us to continuously develop a humbitious team. Supervising the Student Council Without the students, the over 250 visits paid to our school by more than 3000 educators, teachers, parents, students from the States, New Zealand, Taiwan, mainland China and Hong Kong in the past six years would not have been possible. The Student Council is the major force behind all these visits. I have been working with the Student Council since I began teaching here. The prime jobs of the Student Council are to make students become involved in managing the school in its different aspects as well as to develop students autonomy, sense of ownership and multiple intelligence. Training the Student Ambassadors At FKYC, we are proud that all students have been a student ambassador once. The inviting and inspiring 3000 visitors we have hosted will never forget the warm welcomes, lovely smiles and friendly handshakes they received once they stepped into the school. With heartfelt thanks, the visitors have played an important role in offering wonderful opportunities to our students to demonstrate hospitality, gain confidence, develop communication skills and most importantly, appreciate the school and themselves. All Secondary One (S1) students help receive and interview the Primary Six students who are enthusiastic about studying at our school. From the reflection our S1 students have written after the interviews, I have seen them grow with happiness, confidence and sincerity. Working with Students Parents Parents play a constructive part in both students learning activities and promoting school philosophy. They are eager to help us with student ambassador training, meet our guests and assist in setting up the library. The MIE Committee works closely with the Home-School Association to provide more chances for the parents to have access to the 13

14 teachers, to learn more about their children and to participate in school planning and activities. Places Whether the physical environment is safe, caring, and loving is also the MIE Committee s concern. Maximizing the Use of Resource Rooms Making use of the valuable experience I gained on the tour to Kentucky and Atlanta in 2004, I have organized a number of workshops for my colleagues about how we can take advantage of our subject-based resource rooms to maximize self-learning. Having conducted a number of sharing sessions, we have been progressing in the design and usage of the rooms and we share our experiences with the public. Refining the Whole School Setting The Student Council has constantly reviewed whether the campus is green, warm, inviting and attractive to students. After getting feedback from our students, parents and teacher representatives such as me, they work with the school to enhance the school environment. Policies Policies are the soul of constructing a genuinely inviting school. Promoting FACE Education FACE Education is a synthesis of worldwide educational theories and practices which work in line with Invitational Education philosophy in which every child s uniqueness should be treasured. As a major driving force, I have been implementing and promoting these beliefs both internally and externally. Programmes All the programmes are held with specific goals which aim to equip students with critical thinking, global vision, abilities to appreciate and work cooperatively. The World Wide Classroom The MIE Committee has organized a series of exchange programmes to China, Australia and the States. The students have learned to see the world from different perspectives and to adapt to different cultures and customs on the tours. Processes Since learning is a process, both the whole learning process and product should be viewed as equally important. Both teachers and students should be granted opportunities to evaluate and take further steps to improve. 14

15 Fostering Continuous Assessment & Self-Reflection Evaluating daily performance is contributory to the all-round development of students. The student ambassadors carry out self-evaluations and peer evaluations after each visit. The MIE Committee has given help during the whole process. Promoting IE Values Overseas & Locally Not only is being inviting a personal development, it is also the ability to reflect upon what one has done, to verbalize the learning process and share it with others. I am so honoured to have a number of chances to share the successful experiences in implementing IE on behalf of the school such as at the 2004 Atlanta IAIE Conference, the EMB workshops, school visits and so on. Through these occasions, I have learned a lot and have brought back the learning to school so as to make my school to become a more genuinely inviting school III. Conclusion All my growth and success should be attributed to my beloved parents, sisters, principals, colleagues, students, students parents, friends from the IAIE (HK) and all the visitors who have kindly visited my lessons. Without their support, encouragement, patience, feedback as well as willingness to be my mentors, I would not have evolved into the person you see today. Without their collective efforts, I would not have the courage to embark on the voyage of making Hong Kong classrooms genuinely inviting. For these reasons, I strongly believe that an inviting teacher has a lot to give but also has a lot to earn. 15
