2 1 Words from the Director , 向 生 命 學 習 (Learning from Life) Without a doubt, 2012 was a year of brilliance and abundant success in the Taipei Zoo s history of international collaborations, interactions and exchanges. Besides signing an agreement of friendship with the Kushiro Zoo of Japan on January 31, as planned, the Zoo also sent representatives to participate in international conferences and symposiums that were held in Australia and eight other countries during the year to strengthen contacts with related international organizations and to conduct overseas training of first-line animal keepers. Moreover, in order to enhance the capability for inter-zoo support and cooperation and in response to operational needs, the Zoo also sent representatives to China, Japan, and Korea for professional exchanges to learn or help introduce exhibition-related knowledge and new techniques in animal management. For the promotion of the Cooperative Conservation Action Plan Involving Foreign and Domestic Zoos, the Zoo planned and conducted 3 symposia on wildlife ex situ conservation and population management, as well as inviting Western and Asian zoos, domestic research institutes, and scholars and experts for exchanges of experience and knowledge. In November, the Asian Wildlife Ex Situ Conservation and Population Management Symposium was held to carry out the assessment and establishment of pedigrees for 13 endangered species and native species of Taiwan in a joint effort for the conservation of wildlife and the sustainability of populations in the world through intra-regional cooperation. Additionally, in terms of implementing conservational education and improving rescue techniques, the Zoo hosted education and training courses on avian medicine and bat conservation involving Southeast Asian zoos and invited professional personnel from friendly zoos to give lectures, increasing and deepening the passing on and exchange of experience for various techniques. Colleagues made their utmost effort to complete missions, gaining praise from international partners and building deep friendships, besides introducing new concepts and techniques, to help boosting the Zoo s international status, having exerted an unprecedented influence. Once again, I would like to express my utmost respect and gratitude to my colleagues. Furthermore, early in the year, we were recognized as Meritorious Group in the Promotion of Social Education 2011, were accredited as Environmental Educational Facility or Venue by the Environmental Protection Administration, Executive Yuan in April, signifying scholars and experts recognition of our many years of dedication to promoting and implementing environmental education, and, in June, were further awarded the 2012 Outstanding Environmental Education Award of Taipei City, achieving results that were obvious to all as 165,142 people participated during the year. Moreover, in November, our Volunteer Service Team won the th Golden Diamond Award for Excellent Volunteer Team, which was the greatest recognition of the effort and hard work by our volunteer partners and fellow staff, and I would like to particularly thank everybody and to invite everyone to share such an honor together. In 2012, the Zoo implemented several innovative measures, including the establishment of the Labor Safety Supervising Team for strengthening safety inspections of worksites on the zoo campus, the trial operation of the Temporary Pet Keeping Service, the promotion of cross-organizational cooperation for Formosan Black Bear population management, and so on. In addition, we also did not forget to care for the disadvantaged, in particular, inviting sick kids and their families to participate in exclusive activities such as Red-crowned Crane and Koala Dream Fulfilling Tours. To be marking our 100 th year of establishment next year (2014), besides cherishing the past and seizing the present, we are to greet the future with a more active attitude. By adopting the theme of Learning from Life to back our core value of Warmth and Harmony, we are to stride toward the next 100 years. Teaming up all like-minded partners, we will face the future with a humbler heart and will promote collaborations for species conservation with a more active attitude. 3 2 Zoo Overview 2 Zoo Overview Organizational Profile ,554 8 Founded 98 years ago, the Taipei Zoo was relocated to the current site in Wenshan District (Muzha) in October The establishment of the new Zoo boasts four major functions education, research, conservation, and recreation, being regarded as one of the finest, globally-recognized metropolitan zoos in the world. Structurally, the Taipei Zoo originally had 4 divisions and 6 offices, but the Conservation and Research Center and several others, including the Research and Evaluation Office, the Systems Administration Office, the Animal Adoption Team, and the Engineering Team, were added in recent years in response to the Zoo s operational development. Additionally, the Labor Safety Supervising Team was established in September 2012 to reinforce workplace safety and health inspections. The Zoo s personnel quota is 329 (not including temporary staff), and currently, the Zoo has 304 personnel 65 staff members, 197 workers, 13 contract employees, and 29 security guards. Service Status The Taipei Zoo covers a total area of 165 hectares of which nearly 100 hectares have already been developed and utilized with the remaining area being reserved as natural secondary forest. Exhibition zones open to the public include 6 indoor centers (i.e. Education Center, Penguin House, Koala House, Amphibian and Reptile House, Insectarium, and Giant Panda House), 8 outdoor areas (i.e. Formosan Animal Area, Children s Zoo, Asian Tropical Forest Area, Desert Animal Area, Australian Animal Area, African Animal Area, Temperate Zone Animal Area, and Bird World), and the Conservation Exhibition Center. In 2012, the number of visitors has reached 2.96 million. The Zoo currently houses 404 species of penned-in animals totaling 2,554 individuals in number (not including insects, some fish, and animals under the COA s shelter program) Annual Report Of Taipei Zoo 5

7 3 Animal Conservation and Research 5. 推 展 跨 區 域 族 群 管 理 推 動 本 園 動 物 以 血 統 書 為 依 據 之 永 續 保 育 繁 殖 計 畫 Promotion of Cross-regional Population Management The Zoo has guided the cooperation among public and private institutes committing to the conservation research and breeding of Formosan Black Bear (Ursus thibetanus formosanus ) in the country, launching the Formosan Black Bear Restoration Program for cross-regional population management. Sixteen domestic zoos and conservation institutes signed the Conservation Declaration on the Cooperation for the Restoration of Formosan Black Bear at the Zoo on June 26, marking the first such cooperation for the conservation of Formosan Black Bear, and began to carry out the cross-organizational rearrangement of animals in December (The Endemic Species Research Institute (ESRI), Council of Agriculture sending 2 Formosan Black Bears to the Leofoo Village Safari Park). 6. 9 3 Animal Conservation and Research International Cooperation and Exchanges 1. 參 加 國 際 性 會 議 IZE WAZA ASZWM 2 10 AAZV SEAZA IMATA 6 2 The focuses of international cooperation and exchanges for 2012 involved the following: The Taipei Zoo continued to develop and accumulate practical skills for the caring, feeding and breeding of the Giant Panda, putting efforts into scientific researches for the conservation of the Giant Panda, and actively participated in international conferences related to the Giant Panda, sharing related research data with others. In order to improve the exhibition environment for the Red-crowned Crane (Grus japonensis ) and its breeding at the Zoo, the Zoo sent representatives to study in Japan. The Zoo a l s o c o n t i n u e d t o a s s i s t China in rearing and breeding Formosan Serow (Capricornis swinhoei ) and Formosan Sika (Cervus nippon taiouanus ). Furthermore, the Zoo hosted related professional symposiums t o f a c i l i t a t e i n t e r n a t i o n a l 1. Participation in International Conferences professional exchanges, focusing on the ex-situ conservation and population management of wildlife as the theme of international conferences held in the year, in the hope of successfully implementing the Cooperative Conservation Action Plan Involving Foreign and Domestic Zoos to jointly sustain the survival of ex situ wildlife populations. In 2012, the Zoo sent 29 representatives to take part in 10 international conferences and symposiums and 18 representatives to participate in observational visits and exchanges. Through the signing of cooperative conservation agreements and cooperative memorandums of understanding, the Zoo has established longt e r m c o o p e r a t i v e re s e a rc h relationships with all sectors. Participated in the 1 year anniversary event celebrating the housing of Formosan Sika and Formosan Serow in the Liugongdao National Forest Park in Weihai City, Shandong, China and conducted an animal health checkup. Studied the techniques for the artificial incubation of Red-crowned Crane and the design of the new house for Red-crowned Crane at the Kushiro Zoo in Hokkaido, Japan. Participated in the opening ceremony for the Formosan Sika and Formosan Serow Center in Weihai City, Shandong, China. Conducted a study and international exchange for improving wildlife medical techniques at the Singapore Zoo. Assisted with the delivery of a pregnant Formosan Serow and the caring of the newborn animal at the Liugongdao National Forest Park in Weihai City, Shandong, China. The Wenshan Safe Community and Healthy City Promotion Association in Taipei City sent a representative to the Toshima-ku of Tokyo, Japan. 9 Visited zoos and aquariums in Jiangsu Province and Zhejiang Province, China Delivered the Przewalski s Horse to the Seoul Grand Park, South Korea Hosting Professional Symposiums (1) To promote the Cooperative Conservation Action Plan Involving Foreign and Domestic Zoos for the joint sustainment of the survival of ex situ wildlife populations, the following international conferences on wildlife ex situ conservation and population management were held in 2012: In June, the 2012 Education Exhibition and Species Survival Symposium was held. About 150 participants from 35 zoorelated organizations in Taiwan, Europe, North America, and the South East Asian region took park in the event. In September, the Tomistoma (Tomistoma schlegelii ) Population Management and Exhibition Workshop was held. Six experts and scholars from the US, Spain, Hong Kong, and Singapore were invited for the event. The event focused on the population management and exhibition of Tomistoma (Tomistoma schlegelii ) and covered issues like captive breeding, pedigree management, and medical care. 11 3 Animal Conservation and Research In November, the 2012 Asian Wildlife Ex Situ Conservation and Population Management Symposium was held with the agenda being divided into 2 phases the Population Management Training Workshop and the Seminar on Population Management and Regional Species Conservation Plan. Participants from 9 countries were invited, including 18 foreign participants (lecturers and trainees included), 32 local workshop participants (Taipei Zoo personnel included), and 84 local conference participants (Taipei Zoo personnel included). Through the population management training course directed by the Conservation Breeding Specialist Group (CBSG) of the - International Union for the Conservation of Nature 2012 Professional Medical Training Course for (IUCN), the assessment and establishment of Veterinarians of Zoos in South East Asia (theme: pedigrees for 13 threatened species in the Asian avian medicine) at the ESRI in March. Over 70 region (Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, participants from 20 organizations in Taiwan, the and Indonesia) and protected native species of Taiwan were integrated to draw a consensus for U.S., Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Japan, Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, South Korea, and ( the cooperation plan on Asian species. Through the seminar, representatives from major zoos in Asia also shared their respective experiences in species conservation and specifically discussed about the integrated conservation plan concerning target species in Taiwan. Veterinarians from the Kushiro Zoo in Hokkaido, Japan, Dr. Naomi Tsukue and Dr. Hiroko Iima, came to the Zoo to help examine Red-crowned Cranes. Associate Professor Masako Izawa of the University of the Ryukyus was invited to give a lecture on Ecology and Current Status of the Iriomote Cat (Prionailurus iriomotensis ) at the Taipei Zoo. We also led zoo visitors through guided tours of facilities for water and energy conservation and the utilization of rain water at the Zoo. A total of 663 groups (11,188 visitors) toured the facilities in In terms of water conservation improvements, water-efficient equipment were renewed according to environmental management and restroom water usage demands; the Zoo s rain water system was cleaned to maintain normal functioning and to increase the percentage of rain water recycled and utilized. In addition, leakage checks and improvements were conducted on all pools and pipes in the Zoo to reduce water leakage from pipelines. A 10.99% (83,432 units) reduction in water usage was achieved in In terms of energy conservation improvements, the Zoo continued to replace T8 light tubes used in the Animal Hospital, Quarantine House, Special Exhibit House, 69KV Substation, and Vehicle Maintenance Area with T5 light tubes and changed fire escape indicator lights and exit/entrance lights to LED lights. Moreover, the Zoo replaced the switchboard of the 69KV Substation to increase the Zoo s electrical power conversion efficiency and renewed the air conditioning equipment at the Reptile House to improve machine efficiency and air quality, expecting to cut more than 25% in the Reptile House s air-conditioning power consumption and more than units off the overall power consumption. Finally, the Zoo also regularly carried out maintenance of air-conditioning systems to maintain energy efficiency. Overall, a 2.17% (268,120 units) reduction in power usage was achieved in Implementing Themed Educational Events 1. Animals Screaming 2012 The Zoo hosted 5 workshop camps during the summer vacation, including Animal Doctor Experience Camp, Night Visit to the Black Forest, Bear Mighty, Great Assembly of the Bat Family, and Sleepover at the Zoo. In keeping with the solar terms, participants were allowed to go through and experience a complete series of activities throughout the year from planting, weeding, applying fertilizer, harvesting to making finished products. The Zoo provided opportunities for modern individuals and urban children to find out about the ABCDE 2012 natural ecology of rural areas and the cultivation methods and growing processes of aquatic crops and for them to understand the importance of the farmland role as wetland. 3. Zoolloween Halloween Activity Series The celebration of Halloween and the concept of conservation were put together in a fun combination to have participants identify with the conservation ideals of the Zoo. With the focus on environmental changes, the Zoo continued to hold a series of Halloween activities in 2012, which included Zoolloween Cross-End of the World Special Exhibit, Zoolloween Ark Party Conservation Celebration and Halloween Masquerade, and Zoo-O -Lantern Animal Pumpkin Week. Visitor Number and Admission Ticket Statistics ZOO-O-LANTERN Zoolloween In 2012, the number of visitors reached 2,967,234 people, and the ticket revenue totaled NT$100,834,619. In all, 1,852,103 people visited the Special Exhibition House, and 2,118,038 people purchased tickets to ride on the shuttle train. Having referred to measures adopted by foreign and domestic zoos or theme parks regarding accompanying pets and to properly solve animal epidemic prevention and animal welfare issues, the Zoo had established the Temporary Pet Keeping Service Center, which began trial operation in March. The online registration system for students doing public service at the Zoo had been launched, providing students with social learning service. Two groups of Shanghai Zoo personnel (8 individuals in all) arrived at the Taipei Zoo for professional visit and learning. The Zoo held a seminar on the Spot-legged Tree Frog (Polypedates megacephalus ) Removal Project, which was participated by zoo staff and volunteers, and conducted nighttime observation and collection of adult frogs on the campus at night. The Taipei Zoo held the Dreamnight@Taipei Zoo - Dancing Red-crowned Cranes event, inviting children and family members of children with chronic illness and disabilities to participate. (Note: Dreamnight at the Zoo is a global project that is organized particularly for children with chronic conditions and disabilities. Joined in 2005, the Taipei Zoo was the 39 th and the only zoo in Taiwan to join the project. The Taipei Zoo was awarded top distinction for the 2012 Outstanding Environmental Education Award of Taipei City by the Taipei City Government. Focused on environmental changes, the Zoo had organized a series of Halloween and animal conservation educational activities, holding the Zoolloween Cross-End of the World Special Exhibit in the Education Center between October 2 and November 18. The Taipei City Government awarded volunteer service medals at the Senior Citizens in High Spirit, Raised Happiness the Senior Citizen Carnival event. Additionally, during the event, Department of Education Commissioner Ding Ya-wen awarded 46 senior employees who have served over 26 years at the zoo with certificates of merit. 11/12 Mayor Tom Tate of Gold Coast, Australia visited the Zoo. 11/23 11/30 The Taipei Zoo Volunteer Service Team won the 16 th Golden Diamond Award for Excellent Volunteer Team. Zoo staff and volunteers, led by Director Chin Shih-chien, attended the award ceremony. On behalf of team members, Captain Chiu Chi-peng received the award from Mayor Hau Lung-bin. With government officials in attendance, including Taipei City Deputy Secretary-General Huang Jung-feng, Department of Education Commissioner Ding Ya-wen, and representatives from related authorities that assisted in the Koala s coming to Taiwan, the Zoo held the One Year Anniversary of Koala Arriving in Taiwan and Animal Conservation Christmas Tree Lighting appreciation party to show care for the disadvantaged. Nearly 100 sick kids, children from children s homes, and family members were invited to participate.
