13 (10) Modification of Narrative Mode of Historical Materialism as Seen in the Two Functions of Science and Technology Yu Wujin 132 The traditional narrative system of Historical Materialism has three theoretical premises, namely, the infiniteness of resource and production development, the single function of productive force that is always progressive and revolutionary, and the freedom of science and technology from ideology. Contemporary Western philosophers have challenged these three premises and revealed another function of science and technology science and technology as ideology, invoking changes in the narrative mode of Historical Materialism. First, ecological context joins as a basis of Historical Materialism. Secondly, new lights have been cast on the nature and historical role of productive force. Thirdly, the proposition that social being determines social consciousness is re2interpreted. And fourthly, the notion of ideology is expressed in a new way. (11) Diversity of the World Chen Shunwu 144 The diversity of social and cultural development meets with extremely serious challenge in a time of economic globalization led by developed Western capitalist countries, the global expansion of the single path of development defined by the Western civilization and values, and the unilateralism and political, economic and cultural hegemony of super powers. We must protect and promote diversity in development, industrialization, informationalization and globalization, and explore possibilities of co2existence and prosperity of cultures to ensure mankinds existence and sustainable development. This is an issue urgently requiring a response from philosophy and social sciences. This paper draws from modern scientific theories and philosophical studies and discusses the relations of diversity and uniformity, regularity and development (progress). The answers to these questions directly determine the direction of development. A world of diversity requires a good understanding of mans position in the society, that of nation state in the world and that of human society in the nature. Development should be obtained without scarifying diversity. To achieve this, we must build up a just and reasonable new order for international politics and economy, so that man and nature may develop in harmony and free and comprehensive development of individuals may be in accordance with the comprehensive progress of society. (12) Japanese Experienceand the Engendering of Modern Chinese Literature Li Yi 157 In the early stages of modern Chinese literature, Japan played a special role in activating Chinese writers feelings toward existence and introducing foreign cultures. But this is not so simple as to say that the experiencewith Japanese literature brought new elements to Chinese literature, as is claimed in most comparative studies. We should further explore Chinese writers life experience in Japan and try to find out the important links between the changes of these writers feelings toward existence and those of Chinese literature. It is perhaps more proper to say that Chinese writers activated themselves as producers of literary works through their experience in Japan. They made a new reflection upon and got unprecedented understandings of their own world, which effectively brought modern Chinese literature into form. 208
