Although clean air actions have been legislated by many nations to mitigate pollutants emission with the aim of protecting the atmospheric environment, serious air pollution events are frequently

3 Journal of Environmental Sciences 26 (2014) 1 1 Available online at Journal of Environmental Sciences Progress and prospects of atmospheric environmental sciences in China: Preface Anthropogenic emissions impact significantly the atmospheric environment which human being relies on, e.g., global warming, stratospheric ozone depletion, photochemical smog, acid rain, haze and so on. Although clean air actions have been legislated by many nations to mitigate pollutants emission with the aim of protecting the atmospheric environment, serious air pollution events are frequently observed in diﬀerent regions, especially in developing countries. To best evaluate the eﬀect of various control measures as well as the influence of various pollutants on the atmospheric environment, the levels, sources and sinks of the pollutants are needed to be comprehensively investigated. Since atmospheric environment involves multidisciplinary approach, scientists with diﬀerent disciplines together can provide profound understandings about the atmospheric environmental problems. Sino-French Workshop on Atmospheric Environment is just one of such platforms to join scientists together for collaboration, exchange of experience and ideas. Sino-French Workshop on Atmospheric Environment has been successfully held for three times, and has become a regular two-year meeting. The workshop not only gathers Chinese and French scientists engaged in the field on atmospheric environment, but also attracts scientists from other Asia, Europe, Australia and the USA. To spread the information about the achievement of the workshop, a special issue dedicated to the Second Sino-French Workshop on Atmospheric Environment has been published in the Journal of Environmental Sciences (JES) in 2012 (JES, 2012, 24(1)). The organizers of the workshop and the editors of JES are very satisfactory about the special issue, and further organized this special issue to be dedicated to the achievement of the Third Sino-French Workshop on Atmospheric Environment, which was successfully held at Qingdao, China in September, Twenty five peer-reviewed articles representative of the topics dealt with in the workshop have been selected for publication in this issue. We are very grateful for the guidance and support to the Ministry of Environmental Protection of P. R. China. We are especially grateful to the French Embassy, the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (Special Program of Reform-Started Fund-Grant No YSGQ-16), the Shandong University, the Ocean University of China and the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique for the financial support and organization of this fruitful workshop. The journal publishes original, peer-reviewed innovative research and valuable findings in environmental sciences. The types of articles published are research article, critical review, rapid communications, and special issues. The scope of the journal embraces the treatment processes for natural groundwater, municipal, agricultural and industrial water and wastewaters; physical and chemical methods for limitation of pollutants emission into the atmospheric environment; chemical and biological and phytoremediation of contaminated soil; fate and transport of pollutants in environments; toxicological effects of terrorist chemical release on the natural environment and human health; development of environmental catalysts and materials.
