Abstract This dissertation review the historical process of upland governance in Taiwan. Through recently investigations in which community mapping has been done in term of indigenous traditional territory. Administrative governance, social institution of ethnic group might be confronted with politics of demarcation in the realm of indigenous traditional territory. However, since Japanese colonial period, upland governance undertook different techniques of "demarcation " and "sedentariness" upon upland indigenous people and their circumstance. Therefore, we might see the rationality and operation of demarcation principle changed parallel to the transformation of ethnic and tribal thinking. The efforts of governance with directly impacts indeed changed the indigenous society within and without, where re- interpretations of the traditional might rest on. By virtue of the improving state rationality, administration begin spread over the operation of demarcation. When the perspective of "seeing like a state" stepped into the traditional territory, the instruments of the legibility, simplicity, centralization and sedentarization imposed on the ends of governance. An attempt to alleviate the complexity of traditional and local knowledge, thus would dissolve the privilege of upland indigenous. ix

Thus we can see the particular historical and social factors emerged in the process of upland governance in Taiwan: colonial characters of upland governance endue, administrative power as frontier practice, economic calculus of sedentariness project, absorption and adaptation of demarcating thinking were implanted to the form of indigenous life. Excluding the indigenous usage of collecting, hunting and agricultural stocks, state dispose the social order and security on the space of upland. Through again and again repeat practice, modern state complete the domination of the indigenous.
