Research on the Development of Folk Sports in Taiwan With Rope-Jumping as the Main Subject Abstract The first national folk sports competition, held in Tainan city on Sep 9, 1976, established the desire to compete in folk sports in Taiwan, which also changed our preference from counting the jumping times within a certain time to fancy jumping. This research, by means of document analysis and textual research from historic perspectives, aims to study the following fact how does the Taiwan government popularize rope-jumping domestically, at schools as well as in the world with increased cultural exchanges. The conclusion of the research is as follows: 1. Government authorities have positively promoted the popularity of rope-jumping in Taiwan. Actually, rope-jumping has been treated as teaching material in PE since 1964. Furthermore, Provincial Governor Hsieh Tung-min has promoted rope-jumping, shuttlecock-kicking, and kite flying with great efforts and actively brought rope-jumping onto campus. With continuous support on the development of rope-jumping, the Ministry of Education authorized National Tainan Teachers College to practice mid-term plan (5 years) for folk sports in 2000, and rope-jumping was included in The First National Sport Meeting. 2. Elementary and junior high schools play a very important role in the promotion of rope-jumping. Rope-jumping has become popular on campus around Taiwan since the first folk sports competition held in III

Tainan in 1976, with support from Ming-Ho Junior High School, Ming-Ho Elementary School in southern Chiayi County, and Wu-lun Elementary School, An-le Junior High School in northern Chilung City. 3. The Chinese Youth Folk Sports Troupe From Taiwan,R.O.C, lasting for 7 years and initiated by the Ministry of Education in 1981, was the prelude to global interaction. Three more groups, Taiwan Group, Taipei Group, and Kaohsiung Group, also have taken part in it since 1998. These four groups presented their performances round the world annually, playing an important part in promoting our foreign relations and introducing our culture to foreigners successfully.
