32 A Seismic Simulation of Architectural Model for Teaching Structural Engineering Kuei-Ming Hsu Department of Civil Engineering Kao Yuan University Ru-Jen. Chao Department of Information Management Kao Yuan University ABSTRACT The complicated structural behavior of a building subjected to seismic forces is not easy to comprehend for many undergraduate students in learning structural mechanics. Researchers and experts study seismicity by means of recording structural damages and using simplified mathematical model that requires advanced education and usually is taught in graduate school. In order to help undergraduate students to understand many structural phenomena such as model vibration, resonance, seismic resistant, and failure mode, etc, this study presents a three-story wooden structural model with different arrangements utilizing a horizontally shaking table for seismic simulation to assist teaching and learning. This paper demonstrates that students with simulation-aided teaching have better comprehension. Students can observe the structural behavior and easily realize the theories of structural mechanics with simulation model. This seismic simulation with the proposed structural model is practicable in teaching structural mechanics related courses and much cheaper than those used for research purposes.
