From 早报副刊,17 年 11 月 22 日禅师与兰花摩迦有一位禅师非常喜欢兰花, 种了许多名贵的品种, 讲经说法之余, 总是悉心照顾, 爱之如命一天, 金代禅师因事外出, 就交待弟子们好好照顾兰花但是, 有一个弟子在浇水时, 一不小心把兰花架碰倒了, 顿时, 那许多名贵兰花, 全跌在地上, 支离破碎这个徒弟心想 : 这下师父回来, 看到心爱的兰花这番景象, 不知道要多生气! 金代禅师回来后, 碰到兰花架的徒弟, 立刻跪下在师傅面前请求原谅责罚竟然, 金代禅师一点也不生气, 反而心平气和地安慰弟子道 : 我种兰花是为了用香花供佛, 同时也美化寺院环境, 并不是为了生气来种兰花的不是为了生气来的这句禅话实在太妙了, 试想, 世上还有什么值得生气的呢? 夫妻相处难免有意见争执的时候, 假如能套用这句禅话, 做夫妻是要相亲相爱的, 不是为了生气, 就能化干戈为玉帛交朋友也一样, 朋友是要相互联谊帮忙的, 不是交来误会生气的, 也就能相处融洽儿女不乖时, 我们也可以转个念头想, 生儿育女是教育他们将来奉献国家社会, 不是为了生气而生养, 如此一来就能慈心教导了至于我们到世上做人, 是为了喜悦而来, 不是为了烦恼受苦来的, 所以自己要为自我创造欢喜若是完全靠别人给我们欢喜给我们快乐, 这是不够 18 的, 所谓心中有佛, 心中会快乐, 生活有禅, 生活就欢喜因此, 我们每个人在世上, 每天所作所为, 尽管生活不同, 当遇到不如意失望挫折困顿, 只要我们想到金代禅师 : 我不是为了生气来的! 那么, 在世上不就很快乐 21 了吗? His surgery was on Hsiang-yang Road, but the apartment he rented was on Hu-lun River Street. There was actually no river near Hu-lun River Street, and there was no pond or anything else that might be connected with the "River" in its name. It was just the name of a street in a high-class residential suburb of Taipei. When I went there that afternoon, the wide, black asphalt road shimmered like the hair of a beautiful girl. On the pavement on both sides of the street, trees were neatly and evenly planted in front of the low fence. The leaves were dark green, though they were coated with the inevitable layer of dust from the city air. The dull-red autumn sun was setting at the end of the street. The scene seemed to come right out of an oil painting. Hu-lun River Street was really a perfect place to live. After battling through a day in the ruthless outside world, a person could return to this place of peace and warmth to lick his wounds. Some people liked to lie down in bed and get a good rest, while others preferred to revive their spirits by going for a carefree walk along the road in preparation for the return to the fray the next day. I often went there to see Wei Po, and I always gained this impression about the place.

In the carriage, the acrid smell of sweat evaporated in the heat and mixed with the cloying stench of vomit. The soldiers, now on leave, had casually stripped off their green uniforms, but their cotton vests were the same shade of green. As we passed through the wide plain south of Chiayi, where the fully ripe, golden ears of rice leaned over heavily, it seemed like summer had especially assisted in spreading all the smells: the sweet fragrance of the mature rice whetting one's appetite, the soot from the engine, the festering male body odor of the soldiers, and the rotten stench of half-digested food belched from their stomachs. What a smell! the smell of the slowly decaying sixties, the smell from the farms, the smell of small towns full of home-based industries, the smell of forbidden sex, the smell of military discipline, the smell of a diet high in carbohydrates and low in meat a cloying smell gradually passing by. A line of coaches full of soldiers on leave, their weariness tinged with sadness as they passed by so many towns with station platforms surrounded by flame-of-the-forest trees.
