His grand-father Frederik Philips was a first cousin of Karl Marx. In 1943, he was held in the concentration camp because of a strike. During the occupation, Frits saved 382 Jews and then was awarded the Yad Vashem reward by the Israeli ambassador in 1996 for his actions. In 1999, he was named Dutch entrepreneur of the century. His home city of Eindhoven celebrated his hundredth birthday by renaming the city as Frits Philips Stad and a special coin was minted which bears the nickname "Fritske". 4

In 1968 he took eight senior executives (nicknamed Hogan's Heroes) moving to Fairchild from Motorola. This move caused Motorola to sue Fairchild (unsuccessfully) for theft of trade secrets.
