If you want to get more in-depth information about these hot topics, have you ever thought of using more accurate and reliable sources provided by the Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL) instead of The HKPL hosts a comprehensive collection comprising 11.7 million books and 1.76 million multimedia materials. Beyond books and printed form, the HKPL also provides 61 e-databases and 200,000 e-books. Registered readers can access all e-books and over 20 e-databases in the e-resources collection anywhere and anytime via the e-resources thematic page on the HKPL portal. For example, ProQuest 5000, a comprehensive multi-disciplinary e-database which contains nearly 10,200 titles, of which over 6,000 are in full-text, is available at all the branch libraries. This year, the HKPL also organizes a variety of reading activities including the World Book Day Creative Competition, the Teens and Family Reading Clubs, Storytelling Workshops and Meetthe-Authors sessions, etc, all around the theme of Reading the World. This year s Meet-the-Authors programme features three series of talks under the theme ReadingBroadening Our Horizons, with 19 talks to be held at various public libraries from March to November. Young people and other interested parties are welcome to attend. The talks will be conducted in Cantonese and admission is free. Enquiries: See you on the World Book Day! 5 HKPL's e-resources Know more about Currency War e-resources of the Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL). Safari Business Books Onlineebrary Academic Complete Registered readers of the HKPL can access to Safari Business Books Online and ebrary Academic Complete through the HKPL Website. The former provides e-books on business performance, etc., while the latter provides access to the full-text of e-books on business and economic, computer and IT, for online reading and download to computers or mobile devices. For those business and industry sectors, or senior secondary and tertiary students studying Business, Accounting and Finance, as well as the general public interested in these subjects, they can also visit the Business and Industry Library at 11/F of the City Hall Public Library. The Library hosts a collection of about 35,000 volumes of business and industry reference books and journals, microforms, CD-ROMs and e-databases. The Business and Industry Library Collection provides business management, trade regulations, industrial technology and manufacturing industries, etc.; some 800 journals in Chinese and English to provide up-to-date information and research reports on business and industry of various countries; e-databases providing timely and easily retrievable information on regional analysis, economic indicators, statistical data, trade regulations, etc.; and information on listed companies in Hong Kong. First generation Searching through the card catalogue From 1960s to early 1990s, readers had to go through printed catalogue cards by subjects or authors for a particular book. With that information, they could then go to the bookshelf and get the book. At that time, readers could not check the stock of other public libraries and had to go in person to borrow and return the materials. 7 Second generation Library automated and online access catalogue In late 1980s, the libraries in the urban areas and the New Territories started to study the possibility of automated library service. In 1992, automated system came into operation in February Searching, borrowing and returning materials have become faster and more convenient with the automated library service. Readers can see the status of the materials and their locations through the online catalogue; and may also reserve library materials. In 1994, the complete launch of automation provided a connected online platform for readers to search the collection and to borrow books across all libraries. Since then, readers can return books at any public library and may do so through the book drops after opening hours. They may also use the selfcharging terminals to borrow books, reserve or renew an item through the 24-hour telephone system or the Internet, as well as receive library Computerised check-in and check-out services Readers searching library catalogue on computers Self-charging terminals and Smart Return Station

8 Third generation The Next Generation Integrated Library System The Next Generation Integrated Library System was launched at the end of It is more advanced with a cleaner and clearer interface similar to other popular online search. Readers may have more choices in their search. They may save and export item information with the add-tocart function, the information at any time and share the library content at social networking websites. Readers may also create their favourite or commonly used booklist, rate the collection materials and choose to keep their loan history for future reference. Library cards of three generations Before the automation of library service, each registered reader was issued 3 borrower s tickets made with card paper. Each ticket had the reader s name and address. When you wanted to borrow a book, the librarian would take out the loan card from a pocket in the book and put it inside the borrower s ticket, which would be kept by the library. With the automation of library service, borrower s ticket was a plastic card and had no name or address, but a long library card number. From then on, there was no more pocket or loan card. Library staff scanned the barcode on the borrower s card and the barcode on the books. Then the readers could take the books they borrowed and have their cards back. At that time, the library cards for use in the urban area and the New Territories looked different! Under the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, all public libraries were brought under one system. Borrower s tickets were then known as library cards. But those issued by the ex-urban Council and Regional Council were still in use. Nowadays, readers may choose to use their smart ID when using library service including telephone and online renewal. Know more At the start of the City Hall Public Library, each reader could only borrow one book. 9 館訊 3PIYHY` 5L^Z 十八區顧客聯絡小組茶敘市民開心見誠表達意見 9LHKLYZ.P]L =HS\HISL =PL^Z PU *3. ;LH.H[OLYPUNZ 香港公共圖書館去年十一月舉行了三十五場顧客聯絡小組茶敘共六百多位市民參加向圖書館職員提供最親身和直接的意見圖書館館長在茶敘中與市民就如何改善圖書館服務及設施進行廣泛交流在收回的二千六百多份讀者意見問卷中百分之九十四對圖書館的整體服務感到滿意或非常滿意市民大致認為圖書館的環境館藏及服務能配合時代的發展圖書館感謝市民參與茶敘表達意見我們會繼續致力提升圖書館服務除茶敘活動外圖書館亦透過其他渠道包括在各間圖書館設置意見箱收集讀者意見大家亦可透過電郵傳真等方式表達意見 The Customer Liaison Group (CLG) tea gatherings held in 35 public libraries last November attracted over 600 participants who contributed personal and direct views on public library services. Different issues on public library services were widely discussed between readers and our librarians. Over 2,600 questionnaires were received and 94% of them rated satisfactory or very satisfactory on library services. The HKPL would like to thank the public for joining the tea gathering and giving their valuable views. Their opinions have helped enhancing public library services. 10 The Hong Kong Musicians Series: Ode to China - LIN Sheng-shih A thematic exhibition paying tribute to famous composer ( ) is being held in the Arts Document Reading Room on 10/F of the HKCL until end of June. The exhibition introduces the life and work of LIN through showcasing his records, compositions, photographs as well as news clippings and writings about him. Enquiries: Exhibition on Traditional Chinese Medicine A thematic exhibition on the development and culture of traditional Chinese medicine is being held at the Rare Book Reading Room on 8/F of the Hong Kong Central Library until end of June. Traditional Chinese medicine has a long history of thousands of years and has formed a unique system to diagnose and cure illness. Ancient books and writings on traditional Chinese medicine as well as old Chinese medical charts on acupuncture meridians are on display to give visitors a better understanding of different aspects of the traditional Chinese medicine culture. One of the highlights is the Yellow Emperor s Inner Canon (Huangdi Neijing) in which the doctrines of Chinese medicine are rooted. Enquiries: Hong Kong Public Libraries Newsletter
