10 13Re-energizing the UD Arena for another generation as the home of the Dayton Flyers, a $13.1-million renovation was completed just three seasons ago. The project added suites, loge seats and the Time Warner Cable Flight Deck -- all overlooking Blackburn Court with a powerful view of the action. The Boesch Lounge was redesigned, new restrooms were added and concessions were upgraded. The facility, recognized as one of the greatest in college basketball, was updated with an eye to the future while maintaining its roots as an icon in the Dayton community. "The UD Arena is the best arena in college basketball I have ever seen. It has some NBA touches to it, but still carries itself as a college arena. 11 13In 2002, the UD Arena became a landmark for ESPN. The Arena was the site of the first-ever High Definition basketball broadcast for the network. ESPNs top five college basketball cities: 1. 12 13The Donoher Basketball Center, named for UDs winningest basketball coach Don Donoher, is a state-ofthe-art structure that elevates both the University of Daytons mens and womens basketball programs to the next level. Technology is at the very core of the Centers distinctiveness. An ESPN-style, six-screen theater wall just inside the entrance makes it crystal clear from the initial impression that UD understands the necessity of bringing current technology to bear on competitive performance. One of UDs most prominent alumni, high-tech entrepreneur John McHale, contributed more than a third of the Centers $4.3 million cost. The name is a nod to the past; the Center itself is clear evidence of the Universitys intention to stake out a leadership position at the intersection of college basketball and technology to propel the Flyers to championship performance. 22 13The University of Dayton continues to be ranked among the 10 best Catholic national universities and was selected to the top-tier category among all national universities, according to the June, 2004 issue of "America's Best Colleges" from U.S. News and World Report. "We have built a strong foundation of academic excellence at the University of Dayton, and our reputation is growing -- evidenced by record applications for the first-year class and record sponsored research dollars," said Daniel J. Curran, president. "We're pleased that we continue to be recognized as one of the nation's truly outstanding Catholic universities. More importantly, our small class sizes and excellent retention and graduation rates reflect our strong commitment to students. The generosity of our alumni ranks among the best in the nation when compared to our peers." Among the Catholic national universities above UD in the rankings, only the University of Notre Dame and Georgetown University boast a higher average alumni giving rate. Also among that group, UD has the second-fewest large classes, with only 2 percent of classes having 50 or more students. UD also scored high in retention rate (88 percent) and graduation rate (76 percent). This is the fourth year that UD has been ranked among these 248 peer schools, which offer a wide range of undergraduate majors as well as master's and doctoral degrees. Many of the schools strongly emphasize research. Criteria used in the rankings include peer assessment, graduation and retention ranks, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving rates. UD officials urge prospective students to use ratings to narrow their choices, but highly recommend that they visit campus before making a final selection. UD has everything that you want in your college experience. Great academics, tremendous support and a highly-ranked basketball program. It is a great fit for me. --Monty Scott MAUI CHAMPS! In winning the 2003 EA Sports Maui Invitational Championship, the Flyers joined a prestigious list of past champions. UDs name now hangs in the Lahania Civic Center with the likes of Duke, Kentucky, Indiana and Michigan State. In addition, head coach Brian Gregory became the first head coach in the history of the Maui Invitational to win it in his rookie season. Graduated senior Keith Waleskowski was named the Maui Most Valuable Player. In fact, the Flyers Maui winning percentage of.833 (5-1), is second only to Duke for teams with multiple appearances. Washington, D.C Saint Louis Pittsburgh 28...Charlotte Cincinnati Buffalo Providence DAYTON Richmond The University of Dayton mens basketball team continues to enjoy a major presence on national, regional and local television this season. All told, a possible 25 of UDs 30 regular season games could be on television in the season, with two national appearances on ESPN already confirmed and four others on the Atlantic 10 Television Network. With ten ESPN appearances in the last three years, the Flyers games at Charlotte (Feb. 4, 2005) and at home against Xavier (Feb. 21, 2006) will appear on the Worldwide Leader in Sports this year. Regionally speaking, the Emmy Award-winning Atlantic 10 Television Network will broadcast four Dayton Flyers games through the conference season. The A-10 TV Network, which can also be seen across the nation on ESPN's Full Court package, is aired on nearly 20 affiliates in 15 states (plus Washington, D.C.) and reaches more than 50 million homes. The Dayton community also benefits from a tremendous local partnership with WHIO-TV and Time Warner Cable. Both WHIO and TWTV will originate UD games (both home and road). In addition, the Brian Gregory Show appears on both WHIO-TV and WHIO Radio throughout the season. Coach Gregorys television show, hosted by WHIO-TV sports director Mike Hartsock, airs Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m. The radio airs live on NewsTalk 1290 WHIO from local Buffalo Wild Wings on Monday evenings from 8-9 p.m., hosted by the Voice of the Flyers Larry Hansgen. The legendary Bill Raftery (left) and Sean McDonough broadcast a recent ESPN game from UD Arena. Gregory shares a laugh with Dan Patrick in a recent appearance on ESPN Radios Dan Patrick Show.
