4 Bible Teaching 聖經教導 CONNECTION Unrecognized in His Father's House in Jerusalem, and driven from Nazareth, the home of His earthly parents, but filled with the Holy Spirit and Victor over the powers of darkness, Jesus now begins to lay the foundations of His kingdom - to form His organization. Leaving Nazareth He made His way down to Capernaum, where He had a few friends: Philip of Bethsaida, whom He had "found"(jn. 1:43) on His first visit to Galilee after He was announced as Messiah, who also had brought Nathanael to Jesus; Peter and Andrew, who had been with Him at John's baptizing and at the wedding in Cana, but later returned to their work in Bethsaida; and the nobleman whose son He had healed, and who had believed with all his house, whose home was in Capernaum. No doubt there were many others, but Jesus had planned to gather about Him certain reliable young men as His disciples, to labor with Him in the gospel. Seeing them here at their work gave Him a good opportunity to study their character and qualifications for service. Jesus "knew all men," (Jn. 2:24) and He knew just what He could make of these hardy fisherfolk when they were brought under the power of God. With the calm certainty that always characterized His movements, He walked along the shore of the Sea of Galilee (or Lake of Gennesaret, as calls it) (Lk. 5:1) and "picked His men." Matthew and Mark would infer 意味著 that simply with a wave of the hand He called to them "Follow Me," (Mt. 4:19) and they obeyed. But gives further details of their call, and the account of the miraculous draught which caused them to "forsake all and follow Him," in order to "catch men." 5 DISCUSSION We read that Jesus called Simon and Andrew when they were "casting a net into the sea," (Mt. 4:18; Mk. 1:16) and James and John while they were "mending their nets." (Mt. 4:21; Mk. 1:19) They were men who were not of the elite of society 社會名流 and had no earthly rank or power. They possessed nothing in the way of wealth, although they may have had quite a thriving fishing business. It appears that the two families were partners in the business, or at least they worked together. The first followers of our Lord were humble men, but they were His choice. History, both sacred and profane 世俗的, records many instances of great men who were called to service while at their humble daily tasks: Moses was tending sheep, Gideon threshing wheat, Elijah ploughing, David keeping sheep, etc. It is no disgrace to be poor or to work with our hands. And the Kingdom of Christ does not depend on earthly position or power. Then, as now, it was not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord." (Zech. 4:6) And how true the words later spoken by Paul: "Not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble are called. But God hath chosen the foolish things of this world to confound the wise... the weak things... to confound the mighty." (1 Cor. 1:26,27) What better evidence could we have that the Church was founded by God, than that it began with a few humble fishermen but has reached throughout the world? Jesus said,"come ye after me, and I will make you fishers of men." (Mk. 1:17) Their high calling was perfectly clear. They were henceforth to labor for souls; to seek to draw men out of darkness into light, and from the power of Satan unto God. As they had used a net in catching fish now they were to draw men into the Kingdom, that they might be saved. The Church was to be a "net." As He stood on the shore of the lake the people so pressed upon Him that He stepped into a fishing boat to preach. Then He told Simon, the owner of the boat, to launch out and let down his net. The answer given was that of a good servant: "Master, we have toiled all night and taken nothing: nevertheless, at Thy word I will let down the net." And note the reward of obedience: they immediately "enclosed a great multitude of fishes," so that their net brake. (Lk. 5:5,6) This is a practical lesson for all Christians. Wonderful blessing follows quick obedience to every command of Christ. The world, blinded by sin, may not see the wisdom of our course, but that should not in the least deter 制止 us. When Jesus says "Go," or "Do," we must obey at once. We walk by faith, not by sight, (2 Cor. 5:7) and must believe that what seems unreasonable now will become clear 6

7 hereafter. In the long run we shall find we are not losers, for sooner or later obedience to Christ's commands shall bring a great reward. And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. 西門說 : 夫子, 我們整夜勞力, 並沒有打著甚麼但依從你的話, 我就下網他們下了網, 就圈住許多魚, 網險些裂開, (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) 因我們行事為人是憑著信心, 不是憑著眼見 The trouble with most Christians is that they stay too near the shores of the great ocean of God's love and power; if we would launch out into the deeps of His truth and let down our nets into the well of living water, (Jn. 4:10; 7:38) draw out from the well of His salvation, (Isa. 12:3) we should be "doing business in great waters," instead of idly floating down the stream of life or dabbling 拍水 in the shallows that lap on the shore. (Lk. 5:6) There is no use talking about the Word of God and the necessity of obeying it. It is when we have actually done this that God says He will "pour out a blessing so that (our "net") will not have room to contain it" (Mal. 3:10). It was when they had done as Jesus commanded that they caught the great draught. 8 serving the Lord is a partnership business. It is significant to note that Andrew is not mentioned, and yet we know that he was an active partner in fishing for fish and in fishing for men. partners 5:7 And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. 便招呼那隻船上的同伴來幫助他們就來, 把魚裝滿了兩隻船, 甚至船要沉下去 When Peter saw the power of the Lord and realized afresh Who He was, his first thought was of his own sinful condition and his unworthiness to be associated with Him. He fell at His feet crying, "Depart from me." (Lk. 5:8) But in spite of this confession, Jesus assured him that he was to catch men. None of the four needed any further inducement 誘導 to give their full allegiance to Him, and they "forsook all and followed Him."(v.11) They had been with Him more or less since they first believed on Him, but this was their permanent call to become members of the "inner circle" of the Twelve. 5:8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. 西門彼得看見, 就俯伏在耶穌膝前, 說 : 主阿! 離開我, 我是個罪人! MEDITATION Peter loaned his little boat to the Master for a pulpit and thereby became a partner in the greatest business in the universe. Many Christians launch out into the deep experiences just to enjoy them for themselves, instead of "letting down the net"(lk. 5:4) to catch others. 5:4 Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. 講完了, 對西門說 : 把船開到水深之處, 下網打魚 The net brake and the ship began to sink. There will be some excitement and things will begin to happen when God really manifests His power in our boat. "Fear not,"(lk. 5:10) said Jesus. He has the remedy for all our sin and our impotence 無力. Christ seeks men of action, men He can use. Most of those called of God were practical men. The best business partnership is "Faith and Obedience, Inc." God helps a man to succeed in his business. Peter's words as he fell at Jesus' feet reveal the emotions of the human heart in the presence of a pure work of God. We get so immersed in what we are doing, toiling all night with no results, that when our wonderful Lord steps in and does so simply what all our efforts failed to do, our hearts are humbled for shame. Our work is so tarnished 晦暗 with the spirit of self. His is so pure and holy. Thus we realize our great distance from Him. The world of men is tired of our poor efforts to meet their needs. It takes Jesus Himself to do that. Let us cast ourselves at His feet and cease from our own labors, that His may be substituted! Let Him 8

9 command where the net shall be let down, what we should do next in our service for Him, and the results shall not be wanting. FROM THE GREEK: "Master" is the translation of several Greek words. Here it means "one standing over, placed over one": that is, an overseer. Does Jesus have an opportunity to oversee 監工 your life in everything? 9

10 STUDY How do you account for Jesus' sudden call to these men, and their immediate response? Do you think Jesus had been considering the qualifications of these men since He first met them at the Jordan? Had any of them won souls to Christ? Did the four young men make the right decision in leaving their business? Is a man always justified in leaving an aged father for a career which does not even promise a living? How do you account for the great throng of people? Do you think the healing of the nobleman's son helped to arouse curiosity? How do you explain the great draught of fishes when they had caught nothing all night? Did Jesus know anything about fishing? Had these men expected Jesus to call them to follow Him? Do you think Peter was really a sinful man, in the sense that he was living in sin? Why did he feel sinful? Where do you think Jesus lodged: with Peter in Bethsaida, with James and John, or elsewhere? Is everyone called to forsake all and follow Jesus? 10
