INTRODUCTION The results of the first HKDSE Examination were released on 20 July 2012. To enhance the understanding of the standards of the HKDSE Examination, authentic samples of candidates scripts are selected to form this set of exemplars to illustrate the performance standards at different levels. There are two written papers in this subject. This set of exemplars is selected from candidates scripts of the conventional papers to illustrate the typical performance standards at different levels. As candidates MC responses cannot illustrate well their performance standards, exemplars have not been selected from these sections. It is advisable to read this set of exemplars together with the question papers and the marking schemes in order to understand the requirements of the questions and the marking criteria. The question papers and the marking schemes are published in the Examination Report and Question Papers for 2012 HKDSE Examination. 20
Paper 1 Section B Level 5 exemplar and comments Comments The candidate s response shows an extensive knowledge and clear understanding of electromagnetic induction. The candidate communicates effectively using correct terminology of physics such as rate of change of magnetic flux to account for the induced e.m.f. generated. 21
Level 4 exemplar and comments.. 22
Comments The candidate s response shows a sound knowledge and clear understanding of concepts and principles relating to projectile motion. He/she also manages the resolution of forces and understands the inter-conversion of energy. He/she is able to find the time of flight and vertical displacement of the arrow. 23
Level 3 exemplar and comments 24
Comments The candidate s response shows an adequate knowledge and understanding of facts, concepts and principles relating to kinematics. He/she is able to deduce the separation between the two trains using the information given. The momentum conservation equation is appropriately applied though the speed of Train A just before collision is wrongly identified. 25
Level 2 exemplar and comments Comments The candidate s response shows a basic knowledge and understanding of the concepts and principles of circular motion. He/she is able to find the highest speed of the car in lane 1. The candidate explained the difference in the highest speed in lane 2 using an appropriate equation of circular motion. However, errors are evident such as his/her stating that friction increases with oil patches on the road surface and the incorrect argument that follows. 26
Level 1 exemplar and comments 27
Comments The candidate s response shows an elementary knowledge of heat. He/she is able to obtain the heat released by steam. However, the candidate fails to find the temperature of the frothy milk as the energy released by 100 C water is omitted. 28
Paper 2 Level 5 exemplar and comments 29
Comments The candidate s response shows an extensive knowledge and clear understanding in medical physics. The candidate communicates effectively using correct terminology of physics to describe the working principles of ultrasound B-scan. 30
Level 4 exemplar and comments 31
Comments The candidate s response shows a sound knowledge and clear understanding of concepts and principles in astronomy. He/she manages to derive the equation involving radius, surface temperature and luminosity of stars. He/she is able to point out how the radius of Betelgeuse changes with its luminosity. The limitation of the method of parallax is also well understood. 32
Level 3 exemplar and comments 33
Comments The candidate s response shows an adequate knowledge and understanding of facts, concepts and principles involving energy. He/she is able to find the solar power reaching the Earth s surface. The energy conversion of the solar cell is correctly stated. The candidate knows that solar power is a renewable energy source but he/she fails to identify another one that is feasible for use in Hong Kong. 34
Level 2 exemplar and comments 35
Comments The candidate s response shows a basic knowledge and understanding of the concepts and principles involving energy. He/she is able to find the solar power reaching the Earth s surface. The meaning of renewable energy is also well understood. However, errors are evident such as his/her stating that the solar cell converts heat and light energy to chemical energy. 36
Level 1 exemplar and comments 37
Comments The candidate s response shows an elementary knowledge of atomic physics. He/she is able to state the discrete nature of atomic spectra and calculate the energy of an ultraviolet light photon. However, the candidate fails to handle the parts involving transitions within an atom. 38
