What s New What s New Pak Tsz Lane Park Wins Design Awards In 2013, Pak Tsz Lane Park in Central won two awards for its outstanding architectural design. These include a Merit Award for Urban Design presented by the American Institute of Architects Hong Kong Chapter, and the Design for Asia Award Bronze Award by Hong Kong Design Centre. Hsin Chong is pleased to have played a part in this award-winning project as the main contractor for Pak Tsz Lane Revitalisation. The design of the park was themed on the Origin of Chinese Revolution, combining green features and recreational facilities with interactive elements. The site is a stop on the Dr. Sun Yat-sen Historical Trail and was home to the Furen Literary Society. Construction of Pak Tsz Lane Park was completed in 2011, which marked the centennial anniversary of the 1911 Chinese Revolution. Safety Programme Focuses Attention on Pre- and Post-Holiday Safety Awareness On 22 January, the Shatin to Central Link Contract No. 1109 project team joined with the Occupational Safety & Health Council and RTHK to stage a safety promotional show at its Kowloon City project site. Held in time for the Chinese New Year holiday when accident rates historically increase, the event promoted safety awareness among workers with the goal of reducing accident risks. Two Projects Commence with Bai Sun Ceremonies The main contract for a luxury residential development in Kau To Shan celebrated the commencement of work with a bai sun ceremony on 13 December 2013. Hsin Chong s senior management, its clients and the project team took part in the event. Ir Joseph Choi, Executive Director of Hsin Chong, noted, We are excited about taking this large-scale project forward with our partners from Kerry Properties, Sino Group and Manhattan Group. On 21 January, another new project Public Rental Housing Development at Ex-Au Tau Departmental Quarters kicked off with a traditional bai sun ceremony at the project site in Yuen Long. Cyras Chin, Director of Hsin Chong Construction Company Limited, said, Our team will work closely with the Housing Authority on this new residential project and ensure that it is constructed to the highest quality standards. The programme featured singers to perform and communicate the importance of workplace safety and health through games relating to safety precautions. There was also a lucky draw, and fortune bags were distributed to reward site workers hard work. Participants enjoyed the fun activities and were well reminded to maintain proper site safety measures. Site Workers Warm Up for Work with Baduanjin For frontline site workers, a daily dose of morning stretches is important for them to warm up for work and reduce the risk of injury. At Hsin Chong s Third Street Residential Development project site, site workers take it further by practicing Baduanjin, a qigong exercise that also helps to enhance overall wellness and health. Led by a well-trained team member, Baduanjin has been a routine exercise at the site for well over a year. 4 Spring Issue 2014 5

Anniversary Feature Hsin Chong s annual cocktail reception held on 21 March proved an especially remarkable occasion as the company kicked off its 75 th anniversary while celebrating another successful year with its clients and partners who have staunchly supported the Group. Held at the Hong Kong Club in Central, the annual cocktail reception was attended by approximately 400 distinguished guests and officiated by the Honourable John Tsang, GBM, JP, Financial Secretary of Hong Kong. Mr. Tsang was joined by Dr. Wilfred Wong, SBS, JP, Chairman and CEO of Hsin Chong, in unveiling the slogan Building with Heart for 75 Years to kick off Hsin Chong s 75th anniversary celebration. In his welcome remarks, Dr. Wong observed, While it is intriguing to look at past history, the Hsin Chong story is one of continuing adaptation, flexibility and initiating the necessary changes to enable the firm to grow into what it has become today a fully integrated construction and property development group able to deliver sustainable results over the long term. Annual Results Reach New Highs Hsin Chong s continued success story is reflected in its annual results, which were released on 17 March. During the financial year ended 31 December 2013, Hsin Chong recorded robust financial results. Turnover excluding nominated subcontractors works was HK$9.1 billion, a growth of 4% over the same period last year. Profit attributable to shareholders was HK$185.4 million, a growth of 3% over the same period last year. The Board recommended payment of a final dividend of HK two cents per share. At the cocktail reception, Dr. Wong stated, Our construction business has grown in terms of order book, revenues and gross profits earned. He added, All the construction and property business divisions produced appealing results on the back of the Group s business strength, our effective strategies, the capability and commitment of our people as well as a general increase in market activity. Over the years, Hsin Chong has diversified as well as strengthened its business lines and has now developed into a fully integrated construction and property development group, delivering sustainable and favourable results. Indeed, the 2013 results reveal that Hsin Chong is experiencing a positive transformation. The company achieved new record highs driven by each business division. 6 Spring Issue 2014 7

Anniversary Feature Construction Business Enjoys Wide Spectrum of Clients With respect to the Group s construction business, Dr. Wong noted, Our construction business has lived up to its distinguished reputation for quality, reliability and integrity, meeting the many stringent targets for safety levels and quality standards whist achieving business growth. Hsin Chong s transformation is most evident in its exciting property development projects in the Chinese Mainland. The Group continued to make encouraging progress on La Viva, the unprecedented largescale property development project in Tieling New Town, Shenyang. La Viva represents a new style of suburban living that offers a total quality proposition, including residential, entertainment, education, community facilities, tourist attractions and more. Dr. Wong said. It aspires to become a model for new sustainable suburban town development in the Chinese Mainland. The Phase 1 residential sales launch will be tied to the phased opening of the outlets and water park in the second half of 2014. The project is on track to be developed over a six-to-ten-year period in four phases. Following the acquisition of land parcels in Tieling in 2011, the Group completed another very substantial property acquisition in Beijing, New Times Plaza, in September 2013. Dr. Wong explained, The project improves and diversifies the Group s income stream as well as builds the Group s property assets portfolio base. New Times Plaza comprises a three-storey commercial mall and 168 SOHO units with a total gross floor area exceeding 69,000 square metres. Occupancy rate in both the mall and the residential tower have picked up favourably since the Group took over management. The plan is to revamp the trade mix over the coming years to further strengthen the mall s retail offering, enabling the Group to generate a stable source of income. Dr. Wong said, Hsin Chong will continue to evaluate and act on opportunities to further grow its property portfolio and strive to become a leading brand in the Mainland s real estate market. Property Development Leads Group s Transformed Role In construction, Hsin Chong tallied new highs in 2013 in both revenue and gross profit. Core construction business revenue for the year grew by 4% to HK$8.3 billion, and its gross profit rose 5% to HK$422 million. These figures show that the Group s solid financial performance resulted from an ability to replenish orders and secure repeat business. We secured over HK$10 billion in new contracts and our outstanding value of contracts on hand exceeds HK$17 billion $24.5 billion including nominated subcontractors works setting another record for Hsin Chong. Dr. Wong said. Consistent with tradition, the Group s Building division continues to be the major contributor to financial results. The 2013 growth stemmed from the division s well-diversified portfolio of contracts, ranging from government to public institutions to prestigious private clients. 8 Spring Issue 2014 9

Anniversary Feature In Hong Kong, the Group completed two public housing projects in Shatin, the City University of Hong Kong Academic and Administration Building as well as the Hong Kong Sports Institute and NTT Data Centre. During the year, the Group secured several contracts including two public housing projects at Tung Chung and Yuen Long, Tsuen Wan Adventist Hospital and a private residential development at Kau To Shan, Shatin. In Macau, firmly established relationships bloomed with two major gaming concessionaires, Venetian and Galaxy. Construction at Galaxy Resort and Casino Phase 2 and the Venetian s Parcel 3 project at Cotai Strip have progressed well. In addition, Hsin Chong is working in Macau on campus development at St. Joseph University and in 2013 landed a promising new contract to upgrade works at the wastewater treatment plant in Macau peninsula. For its part, the Civil Engineering division is also making steady advances. The division now manages six MTR projects including Express Rail Link s West Kowloon Terminus Station South, Express Rail Link s Huanggang to Mai Po Tunnels, Shatin Central Link s Tunnel and Stations of Sung Wong Toi and To Kwa Wan, South Island Line s Wong Chuk Hang Depot, foundation works at MTR Nam Cheong Station, together with a new contract for Shatin Central Link s Advance Works for North South Line. Similarly, the Interiors & Special Projects (ISP) division, an integral part of the Group s subsidiary Synergis Holdings Limited, delivered another year of excellent performance. Its quality alterations and additions, renovations and fitting-out services provided a varied mix of prestigious clients and won wide acclaim and recognition. Looking Forward Property and Facility Management Business Continues to Thrives As for property and facility management, Synergis maintained its superb performance as a leading independent property manager in Hong Kong. Its delivery of high-quality services has allowed Synergis to reliably bring in healthy revenue and profit for the Group. Thanks to high contract renewal rates and quality services, revenue for the division in 2013 totalled HK$791 million, and gross profit reached HK$117 million. Hsin Chong has every reason to be upbeat about 2014 and beyond. Hong Kong government authorities plans to continue certain mega-sized infrastructure projects and public housing projects will likely translate into work opportunities for the Group. Hsin Chong is on the cusp of another defining moment, transforming the way business is done. Dr. Wong explained, Having made a substantial entry into property development and the investment business in the Chinese Mainland, we are broadening Hsin Chong s base of profit-generating business. This move will bring tremendous growth in both revenue and earnings to our shareholders in the coming years. He added, We are now a bigger, more specialised, more dynamic and more forward-looking company than we have ever been. Hsin Chong management is confident that, given its expertise as well as its talented and capable colleagues, the company is well-positioned to keep up its tremendous growth. In travelling a carefully considered road to prosperity in everything it does, Hsin Chong and the can-do spirit of its people ensure that the company will live up to its name, just as it has the last 75 years. 10 Spring Issue 2014 11
