227 The study of the pirate, Tsai Chien, who invaded Taiwan during the Emperor Chiaching period of the Ching Dynasty Pu Tzu Hsueh Chang-An Elementary School, Tainan City ABSTRACT Before the Western force invading Taiwan, the turmoil of Taiwan mainly came from civil commotions, such as Chu Yi- kuei s war and Lin Shuang- wen s war. Tsai Chien, the pirate, who attempted to commit aggression and finally occupied Taiwan as a stronghold, changed the view of the Ching government that the chaos in Taiwan was caused by civil disturbances, which was the forerunner before the strong Western force invading Taiwan. Tsai Chien s invasion to Taiwan could be divided into two periods : the disturbing period and the covetous period. After getting jumbo ships, Tsai Chien owned hundreds of ships and the war force of more than 20,000 people, so that he was eager to set up a new stronghold in Taiwan. However, instead of indefinite robbing, Tsai Chien put all his sea war force outside the Luerhmen, which obtained extremely good results in the initial stage and made him possess parts of Taiwan s land actually. Yet it finally led to the siege of the navy of the Ching dynasty. At the end, Tsai lost the battle and escaped, unable to invade Taiwan again.
