248 19 1 A New World of Loyalty in the Shui-hu Hou-chuan Shui-yu Lo Abstract According to documentary evidence, Chen Chen (1614?-?) is likely to be the author of the Shui-hu hou-chuan, which was written in 1664 twenty years after the fall of the Ching dynasty. Chen described the process in which the exiled characters fled overseas to Hsien-lo (Thailand), becoming pioneers of this frontier land. Furthermore, this play continues the historical lines of the Shui-hu chuan (also known as The Water Margin), including the invasion by the Ch ing army, the author s precarious situation, as well as other deeds in the work. To continue this storyline Chen developed a whole new world for the Shui-hu, one which reflected the adherents dismay over the Ming dynasty s advent and anticipation from Cheng Cheng-kung s growth in power. Overall, Chen constructed a window to a meaningful and complex microcosm with his remarkable literary vision.
