Since the founding of the Republic of China in 1912, it has become popular for scholars to keep diaries. In many cases these diaries hare had important documentary value. Xian-Tang Wang (1897-1960), a native of Rizhao in Shandong Province, was a distinguished scholar whose diary has been highly valued by researchers in the field of documentary science. During his tenure as the Librarian of Shandong Province, he was devoted to promoting modern library systems and making the library a center for preserving ancient northern Chinese documents. Wang's diary includes his interpretation of classical Chinese idioms and allusions, stories about contemporary scholars and observations about daily life. It also recorded his poems written in response to the paintings and poems of other scholars and prefaces/epilogues that he prepared for others publications.
