From Cantonese Goldminers to Tan Dun The Transmission of Chinese Musical Culture in New Zealand Gong Hong yu Unitec Institute of Technology Auckland New Zealand 92025 Abstract The musical encounters between China and New Zealand from the latter part of the nineteenth century onwards form one of the most intriguing chapters in the history of Sino - New Zealand cultural relations. Yet there is remarkably little literature on it. This article aims to fill this scholarly lacuna by providing a broad - brushed account of the transmission of Chinese musical culture in New Zealand from the 1860s to the present. It will have a three - fold focus process agency and change. The emphasis here is on the role of Chinese music making in social engagement and maintaining cultural identity rather than on music itself.
