lesson 1 Andrew used an assessment scale from 1 5. 1 = I am at the standard I wanted to reach (my goal). 5 = I can do very little; I am a long way from my goal. Andrew listed the six main skills required for knowing Chinese in a table and wrote the numbers 1 5 in the column under each skill. He looked at some of the Chinese study he had completed at the end of the previous year and used that to help him circle the number that he felt showed the stage he was at on his assessment scale for each skill. (tennis) Your teacher will assess this work. 2C 练 习 learning characters How are you getting on with learning characters? Below are some ways that other students have tried and found useful. Tick the ones you could use in this course. 1. Practise writing the characters as often as possible. 2. Test yourself regularly using the word list in the reference section at the back of this booklet. Cover up first the characters and then the Pinyin. Work from easy to hard, test yourself on the pronunciation and meaning of the characters first, and later you can try to write the characters from memory, while looking at the English or Pinyin. 3. Surround yourself with characters put them up on the walls of your bedroom. Label as many objects as you can. 4. When you meet new characters, look for parts (such as radicals and phonetics) that you have already come across in other characters. This makes it easier to remember them. 5. Start collecting families of characters, making groups that include the same radicals (symbols) (for example, 吗, 啊 ) or the same phonetic (for example, 吗, 马 ). 14 zh1001 te aho o te kura pounamu

lesson 2 6. Get some small pieces of card and write a character on one side, with the corresponding Pinyin and English on the other side. Use these cards to test yourself regularly. 7. Do some research to find out how the various characters developed. Try the Internet or your nearest library. Find out which characters have been simplified over time and study what they looked like before they were simplified. 8. Practise drawing characters in the air. 9. Look out for characters that you know on Chinese shop signs and restaurant menus and so on. 10.
