252 20 1 On Lin Dai-yu: A Round Character Study of The Dream of the Read Chamber Li-chuan Ou Abstract Instead of accessing the characters of The Dream of a Red Chamber as being flat and fixed, we should study them as round characters. By way of illustration, this article analyses how Lin Dai-yu changes with time. Via A. Adler s individual psychology, we can see that a lack of social interest and an inferiority complex marks Lin s early personality. However, in the 42 nd chapter she experiences a critical rite of passage. From this turning point, her personality reaches a different stage. We extensively delineate eight facets of the changes in her behavior and values to reconstruct the portrait of her life course. In the end, we show the raison d etre of Lin s preordained early death - it is not only a fabulous fate but also an aesthetic necessity. Keywords: The Dream of the Red Chamber, Lin Dai-yu, round character, social interest, individual psychology * Li-chuan Ou is an associate professor in the Department of Chinese Literature at National Taiwan University.
