China Rural Survey No.6 2012 Serial No.108 MAIN CONTENTS The Agriculture and Rural Social Transformation in China s Shouguang: A Comment of Economic History And Political Economy Based On Investigation and Case Study Deng Hongtu 2 This paper argues that, the increasing income level during past 30 years have led to great change in demand structure and provided direct stimulation to traditional agriculture. Survey on Shouguang agriculture shows that demand structure changes triggers the farmer's choice of technology and industry, and the later usually leads to changes in the supply structure of agricultural products, which obviously induce the price competition that lead to an organizational and institutional options (race), and therefore there will be multiple forms of agricultural economic organizations resulting from the differences in the structure and nature of capital and land ownership in the same region. The ongoing changes in demand structure gives rise to technological, industrial, organizational and institutional competitions by which the new type of agriculture will substitute for traditional agriculture in order to achieve the overall transformation of agriculture and the rural community. The Endogenous Organizations of Rural Community and the exploration of their Involution Ma Liangcan 12 The endogenous organizations of rural community possess multiple characteristics, such as locality, spontaneity, autonomy, informality, publicity, totalize, and so on, which are the soul of rural community existence and development, and are the organizational guarantee of rural social construction. The survival space of the endogenous organizations is being squeezed, their total social function is being exhausted, their autonomy is being dissolved, and their community publicity is declined because of a violent impact of market economy, of commercialization and of rural institutional change. The endogenous organizations are experiencing the involution process. It is an essential prerequisite for rural social development to repair and reconstruct the endogenous organizations, to rebuild the publicity of community. These repair and reconstruction not only need the national institutional protection and social workers' involvement, but should respect and safeguard the awareness and independence of rural community. - 92 -
