Change in Sex Ratio of Each Age Group (Cont d) 30 65 Age Group 65 and over: 824 863 Being 824 and 863 in 1996 and 2008 respectively, indicating that there was an excess of females. Mainly attributable to the fact that the expectation of life for females is higher than that for males.

This figure is estimated with reference to two data items in the individual registered marriage records provided by the Immigration Department on a monthly basis: place of previous residence being in the mainland of China and duration of stay in Hong Kong being less than one year. The figure thus compiled might have included a few one-way permit holders entering Hong Kong and getting married in less than one year. Nevertheless, it still provides a good proxy indicator to cross-boundary marriage statistics. (2) Since successful applicants of CAMR for the purpose of marrying in the mainland of China may not eventually lead to marriages, the total figure above only gives a crude indicator of the total number of marriages.
