Of Woman Born ( I want to give birth to my unborn self.), ung C.G 2 3 1 When I first became pregnant I set my heart on a son. (In our childish acting-out games I had always preferred the masculine roles and persuaded or forced my younger sister to act the feminine ones.) I still identified more with men than with women; the men I knew seemed less held back by self-doubt and ambivalence, more choices seemed open to them. I wanted to give birth, at twenty-five, to my unborn self someone independent, actively, willing, original. Of Woman Born 2 Every woman extends backward into her mother an forward into her daughter, then giving birth to the daughter ensures the immortality of her female line. . Demeter Core Hades Zeus ( mother country) 4 4 In a sense, many of the evil stepmothers are Mother Goddess figures who, like the Greek goddess Demeter, are essentially protesting the loss of their own Persephone-like daughters to patriarchal marriage and motherhood. Such goddesses equate their daughters with themselves as virgin adolescents. They protest mortal woman s fate (death in childbirth, being replaced by younger women, aging, menopause, etc.) Perhaps the goddess-stepmothers are protesting the loss of their virgin priestesses to patriarchal monotheism.
