313 Fr. Maurus Fang Hao and the Catholic Church in Republican China Lee, Tong-hwa Abstract Fr. Maurus Fang Hao (1910-1980), both status as a scholar and a priest, played a very special role in the history of Contemporary Chinese Catholic Church. As a university Professor, his Missionary career was mainly concentrated upon the works of cultural preaching to literate elite. This works included: edited the Yi Shi Bao ( ) from 1938 to 1941, directed the shangzhi bianyi guan () from 1946 to 1948, and guided the Association of Catholic college students from 1949 to 1960. Meanwhile, his speechs about indigenization of Chinese Catholic Church were propagated the Church s contextualization movement. The purpose of this article is to clarify Father fang s contribution to the Chinese Catholic Church in all respects. In addition, it also explore the relations between Father Fang and some church s leaders, such as: Cardinal bishop Thomas Tien (), Cardinal bishop Paul Yu ) and ( bishop Francis Hsu ( ).
