9 London, United Kingdom 1. City file Part III Hotel Information The capital of United Kingdom, London is the biggest city in Western Europe with more than seven million people. Because of its historical sites and cultural institutions, London is a major tourist attraction. People all over the world are familiar with the city's red double-decker buses and black cabs. London sits on the banks of the River Thames. The city is quite spread out because there was no plan for the city's growth until the 1950s. London has many religious, governmental and scenic places to visit. For example, Westminster Abbey is an ancient church in London's West End. All of England's kings and queens have been crowned in the abbey since Also, some of England's most famous people are buried there, including the writers Charles Dickens and Geoffrey Chaucer and the scientists Charles Darwin and Sir Isaac Newton. The London government building, the Palace of Westminster, contains both Houses of Parliament the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The well-known clock tower rises 98 metres (320 feet) high over the palace. Although many people believe that Big Ben is the name of the clock in the tower, it is actually the name of the bell inside the clock.. Another well-known London building is Buckingham Palace. This is where the queen lives. The Tower of London is one of the oldest buildings in the city. For centuries the tower was a prison. London has many scenic places. For example, Hyde Park is the largest open area in central London. It is joined with Kensington Gardens to make one large park. Trafalgar Square is a popular plaza containing a monument to the famous naval officer Lord Horatio Nelson. Piccadilly Circus, near the centre of London, is a busy crossroads where five roads meet. A memorial fountain stands in the middle of the crossroads. There are many theatres and restaurants in this area. London is known for its many museums. One important museum is the British Museum. It is the oldest public museum in the world, containing art and artefacts from such ancient civilisations as those of the Greeks, Romans and Egyptians. There are two main art museums in London. The National Gallery, which is on Trafalgar Square, has a fine collection of classical European painting. Several of London s large cultural centers are bleak, concrete monstrosities, but the events held inside are world class. The South Bank, on the wrong side of the Thames, looks spectacular at night, and includes the Hayward Gallery,

10 the brilliant Festival Hall, the National Theatre and the National Film Theatre. The Barbican is a brutal architectural nightmare, saved only by the fact that it s the home of the Royal Shakespeare Company, the London Symphony Orchestra and the London Classical Orchestra. The restored Globe Theatre is a faithful reproduction of the original (complete with thatched roof and ash and nutshell floors), which featured Shakespeare s plays and was closed by Puritans in The Institute for Contemporary Art is a great place to relax, hang out and see some cutting-edge film, dance, photography, theatre and art. 2. Hotel Strand Palace Hotel Since it opened in 1909, the Strand Palace Hotel is a 4 star hotel located in Covent Garden. Through the year it has maintained its reputation as one of London s pre-eminent hotels. While some of the original art deco architecture remains intact, our hotel today offers renovated facilities and modern amenities. The Strand Palace Hotel is within 700 meters of the Adelphi and the Vaudeville theatres. Surrounded by the Strand s popular bars and restaurants, Charing Cross Rail and Underground Station is a 4 minute walk from the hotel. A flat-screen satellite TV is provided in each room. Guests also have use of an on-site gym and there is 24-hour room service. A traditional roast dinner and an extensive cold buffet can be enjoyed in the Strand Carvery restaurant. Covent Garden s shops and the Royal Opera House are a 5-minute walk away. The Strand Lyceum theatre and the Novello Theatre are 700 meters from the Strand Palace. 11 Map 3. Travel Guide London is a cosmopolitan mixture of the Third and First worlds, of chauffeurs and beggars, of the establishment, the avowedly working class and the avant-garde. Unlike comparable European cities, much of London looks unplanned and grubby, but that is part of its appeal. Visiting London is like being let loose on a giant-sized Monopoly board clogged with traffic. Even though you probably won't know where the hell you are, at least the names will look reassuringly familiar. The city is so enormous; visitors will need to make maximum use of the underground train system: unfortunately, this dislocates the city's geography and makes it hard to get your bearings. London is a year-round tourist center, with few of its attractions closing or significantly reducing their opening hours in winter. Your best chance of good weather is, of course, at the height of summer in July and August, but there's certainly no guarantee of sun even in those months and that is when you can expect the biggest crowds and highest prices. London Eye The world s largest observation wheel is 135 metres high. It provides a 30-minute, slow-moving 'flight' over London. Designed to reflect the elements of air, water, earth and time - the central theme is a circle of white light from within the rim which sweeps the skyline at 135 metres. The passenger capsules signifying 'time', is lit internally at the point of embarcation. Each high-tech capsule accommodating up to 25 people. The attraction has the capacity to handle 1,500 visitors every hour. The British Airways London Eye is a privately funded venture between British Airways, the Tussauds Group and London architects David Marks and Julia Barfield.

12 The Merlin Entertainments London Eye (known more simply as The London Eye, and also known as the Millennium Wheel), at a height of 135 metres (443 ft), is the largest Ferris wheel in Europe, and has become the most popular paid tourist attraction in the United Kingdom, visited by over three million people in one year. At the time it was erected, in 1999, it was the tallest Ferris wheel in the world, until it was surpassed by the Star of Nanchang (160 m) in May 2006, and then the Singapore Flyer (165 m) on 11 February However, it is still described by its operators as "the world's tallest cantilevered observation wheel" (as the entire structure is supported by an A-frame on one side only). The London Eye is located at the western end of Jubilee Gardens, on the South Bank of the River Thames in London, England, between Westminster Bridge and Hungerford Bridge. The British Museum The British Museum is a museum of human history and culture in London. Its collections, which number more than seven million objects, are amongst the largest and most comprehensive in the world and originate from all continents, illustrating and documenting the story of human culture from its beginnings to the present. The British Museum was established in 1753, largely based on the collections of the physician and scientist Sir Hans Sloane. The museum first opened to the public on 15 January 1759 in Montagu House in Bloomsbury, on the site of the current museum building. Its expansion over the following two and a half centuries has resulted in the creation of several branch institutions, the first being the British Museum (Natural History) in South Kensington in Until 1997, when the British Library opened to the public, the British Museum was unique in that it housed both a national museum of antiquities and a national library in the same building. Its present chairman is Sir John Boyd and its director is Neil MacGregor. As with all other national museums and art galleries in Britain, the Museum charges no admission fee, although charges are levied for some temporary special exhibitions. Madame Tussauds Wax Museum Madame Tussauds is located in one of London's Wax Museum, which has a branch in Amsterdam, New York, Hong Kong and Las Vegas and other places in China. Shanghai Branch also opened in Tussauds is a wax sculptor at Madame Tussauds in London in 1835, Baker Street establishment. Wax Museum in 1884 moved to Marylebone Road Siting now, a fire burned a lot of wax in 1925, but due to molds have been saved, so many older wax products can be reproduced. Madame Tussauds is one of the highest levels of the world's Wax Museum, there are many world famous wax figures, including the most famous horror house.
