2 International Symposium on Theoretical Advancement and Technology Innovation for Emerging Resources International Symposium on Theoretical Advancement and Technology Innovation for Emerging Energy Resources (TATIEER): Deep and Unconventional Hydrocarbon Systems First Circular Energy resources are essential to the development and sustainable economic growth of modern society. It has been projected that by the middle of this century, fossil fuel will remain to be the primary energy resource of the world. At present the conventional petroleum resource can no longer keep up with the ever-increasing global energy demand. The unconventional petroleum resource needs to become the new conventional resource in order to meet the challenges of the world-wide energy shortfall. The global petroleum industry will eventually be transformed from a conventional-dominated regime to a unconventional one. This requires a scientific and technological revolution in the resource E&P, which can challenge the conventional threshold limits of the reservoir petrophysical properties and hydrocarbon accumulation depths, and the conventional wisdoms on the production methodologies and costing, so as to prolong the life span of the petroleum industry. In the 21st century, the major scientific and technological revolution in the E&P of unconventional petroleum resource is marked by three key milestones (1) the development of the continuous petroleum accumulation theory incorporating the nano-scale pore systems, (2) the technological breakthrough in multiple horizontal fracturing and artificial permeability generation, and (3) the development of the low-cost streamlined processing production technologies. The revolution has led to major breakthroughs in the strategic exploration and exploitation of unconventional resources such as oil sand, heavy oil, tight oil, tight gas and coalbed methane (CBM). Shale gas now becomes the major focus for gas exploration globally, and tight oil becomes an important play in unconventional oil exploration. This has now changed the world energy outlook and resource distribution: conventional oil and gas production dominated by the Middle East and Russia and unconventional hydrocarbon production dominated by North America. The global oil and gas industry is currently exploring new frontiers including offshore deep 1

3 International Symposium on Theoretical Advancement and Technology Innovation for Emerging Resources water, onshore deep to ultra-deep strata, and unconventional resources. These represent a strategic shift in hydrocarbon exploration. Recently there have been major breakthroughs in deep strata exploration with a significant increase in wells with depths (TD) of over 6000 m. In the past decade, a significant breakthrough has been made in China in exploring tight oil and gas, shale gas, CBM, volcanic and deep reservoir plays. Advancement has also been made in understanding hydrocarbon behaviors and accumulation mechanisms in nano-pores, and the distribution, assessment and prediction of unconventional resources. Deep and unconventional hydrocarbon resources now play important roles in the Chinese fossil fuel inventory. The recent breakthroughs and R&D innovation in exploring deep and unconventional hydrocarbon resources in China have drawn immense attention among the petroleum industry and academics worldwide. In order to further promote the exploration, advance the theoretical research and technology innovation and accelerate the effective exploitation of deep and unconventional hydrocarbon resources, this TATIEER symposium is organized by the following organizations including: China Academy of Engineering, the Petroleum Geology Division of the Chinese Petroleum Society in collaboration with the Beijing Association for Petroleum Geologists, USGS, Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas, CSIRO and the Queensland University of Technology. The symposium will be held in Beijing in April 2013 and will be hosted by the Research Institute of Petroleum Exploration and Development (RIPED), PetroChina and the CNPC Key Laboratory of Oil and Gas Reservoir. The symposium will invite internationally renowned experts and academics to deliver keynote addresses on recent theoretical advancements and technology innovations related to deep and unconventional hydrocarbon resources and to hold a panel discussion on key issues, research directions and challenges facing the unconventional resources industry. This symposium intends to cater for participants from a range of sectors including experts of unconventional resource exploration and development from major oil companies, managers and researchers from R&D organizations, and academics and students from universities. The symposium particularly encourages young professionals and students to participate by waiving the registration fee for students who will present at the symposium. In the future TATIEER symposia will aim to provide a platform for regular scientific exchange and technical discussion on issues and challenges relating to the exploration and development of energy resources. 2

Presenters, once selected, will be required to provide full papers in English, which will be published in a suitable journal after the symposium, pending on the review outcome. 2. About 200 participants are expected to attend the symposium. The symposium will be held in the Mengxi Conference Centre, RIPED, PetroChina. The full registration fee is US$400 and registration fee for students is US$150. Students who are selected for either oral or poster presentations will have their registration fee waived. 3. All potential presenters are required to provide the title and abstract of their presentation in English (<500 words), and a brief biography (<100 words) to the organizer (see attached forms). The submission deadline for the potential presenters is December 30, Selected presenters will be advised by January 20, The official languages for the symposium are English and Chinese with simultaneous translation.
