1 SUBJECT SYNOPSIS Preparatory Course for Singapore-Cambridge GCE O Level Secondary 3 & 4 SECONDARY 3 & 4 - ENGLISH By the end of Secondary education, pupils will be able to communicate effectively in English as a result of their development in the following areas: Listen, read and view critically and with accuracy, understanding and appreciation, a wide range of literary and informational/functional texts from print and non-print sources Speak, write and represent in internationally acceptable English (Standard English) that is grammatical, fluent, mutually intelligible and appropriate for different purposes, audiences, contexts and cultures Understand and use internationally acceptable English (Standard English) grammar and vocabulary accurately and appropriately as well as understand how speakers/writers put words together and use language to communicate meaning and achieve impact SECONDARY 3 & 4 - MATHEMATICS Mathematics GCE Ordinary Level is intended to provide students with the fundamental mathematical knowledge and skills. The general aims of the mathematics syllabuses are to enable students to: Acquire the necessary mathematical concepts and skills for continuous learning in mathematics and related disciplines, and for applications to the real world Develop the necessary process skills for the acquisition and application of mathematical concepts and skills Develop the mathematical thinking and problem solving skills and apply these skills to formulate and solve problems Recognise and use connections among mathematical ideas, and between mathematics and other disciplines Develop positive attitudes towards mathematics Make effective use of a variety of mathematical tools (including information and communication technology tools) in the learning and application of mathematics Produce imaginative and creative work arising from mathematical ideas Develop the abilities to reason logically, to communicate mathematically, and to learn cooperatively and independently. Key topics include: Numbers and Algebra: Numbers and the four operations; Ratio, rate and proportion; Percentage; Speed; Algebraic representation and formulae; Algebraic manipulation; Functions and graphs; Solutions of equations and inequalities; Applications of mathematics in practical situations; Set language and notation; Matrices Geometry and Measurement: Angles, triangles and polygons; Congruence and similarity; Properties of circles; Pythagoras theorem and trigonometry; Mensuration; Coordinate geometry; Vectors in two dimensions Statistics and Probability: Data handling; Data analysis; Probability

2 SECONDARY 3 & 4 - ADDITIONAL MATHEMATICS Additional Mathematics GCE Ordinary Level aims to enable students who have an aptitude and interest in mathematics to: Acquire mathematical concepts and skills for higher studies in mathematics and to support learning in the other subjects, in particular, the sciences Develop thinking, reasoning and metacognitive skills through a mathematical approach to problemsolving Connect ideas within mathematics and between mathematics and the sciences through applications of mathematics Appreciate the abstract nature and power of mathematics Key topics include: Algebra: Equations and inequalities; Indices and surds; Polynomials and Partial Fractions; Binomial expansions; Power, Exponential, Logarithmic, and Modulus functions Geometry and Trigonometry: Trigonometric functions, identities and equations; Coordinate geometry in two dimensions; Proofs in plane geometry Calculus: Differentiation and integration SECONDARY 3 & 4 - PHYSICS The Ordinary level Physics syllabus provides students with a coherent understanding of energy, matter, and their interrelationships. It focuses on investigating natural phenomena and then applying patterns, models (including mathematical ones), principles, theories and laws to explain the physical behaviour of the universe. The theories and concepts presented in this syllabus belong to a branch of physics commonly referred to as classical physics. Modern physics, developed to explain the quantum properties at the atomic and sub-atomic level, is built on knowledge of these classical theories and concepts. It is expected that students will apply investigative and problem-solving skills, effectively communicate the theoretical concepts covered in this course and appreciate the contribution physics makes to our understanding of the physical world. SECONDARY 3 & 4 - CHEMISTRY This Ordinary level Chemistry syllabus is designed to place less emphasis on factual materials and greater emphasis on the understanding and application of scientific concepts and principles. This approach has been adapted in recognition of the need for students to develop skills that will be of long term value in an increasingly technological world rather than focusing on large quantities of factual materials, which may have only short term relevance. Throughout the course, attention should be drawn to: The finite life of the world s resources and hence the need for recycling and conservation Economic considerations in the chemical industry, such as the availability and cost of raw materials and energy

3 The social, environmental, health and safety issues relating to the chemical industry The importance of chemicals in industry and in everyday life SECONDARY 3 & 4 - BIOLOGY The Ordinary level Biology syllabus is designed to have less emphasis on factual materials, but a much greater emphasis on the understanding and application of scientific concepts and principles. This approach has been adopted in recognition of the need for students to develop skills that will be of long-term value in an increasingly complex and globalised world, rather than focusing on large quantities of factual material, which may have only short-term relevance. The various topics in Biology are taught under four main themes, namely: Principles of Biology Maintenance and Regulation of Life Processes Continuity of Life Man and His Environment SECONDARY 3 & 4 - ACCOUNTS The Ordinary level Accounts subject provides students with the basic foundation to financial accounting. It develops a knowledge and understanding of the nature, purpose and principles of accounting in business. It aims to equip students with: An understanding of the elements, theories and procedures of accounting The skills of recording, organising, summarising and analysing business transactions The skills of analysing, interpreting and evaluating business performance SECONDARY 3 & 4 - GEOGRAPHY The Ordinary level Geography syllabus builds on students experiences and prior knowledge to examine the physical and human phenomena found on Earth as well as their complex interactions and patterns across space. It aims to equip students with: An understanding of the interconnectedness among groups of people, and between people and their environment The range of knowledge and skills to understand and explain physical and human phenomena, and other contemporary environmental and social issues that occur in different places and cultures The skills of gathering and analysing information and an inquiring mind to seek solutions to issues affecting our lives An awareness of appropriate attitudes and values that promotes a positive and sustainable environment SECONDARY 3 & 4 - CHINESE 1 考试目标 1.1 本科试卷供修读中学快捷课程和普通学术课程的学生选考 1.2 本科试卷是遵照中学华文课程标准的相关教学目标及教学内容而编制的
