1 Domaine Lamarche La Grande Rue Cuvée1959

3 La Grande Rue Cuvée 1959 La Grande Rue dates to the 15th century and was held in high historical regard for the last few hundred years by various critics and institutions of those times. Its history in the hands of the Lamarche family starts in 1933, when it was given as a wedding present to Henri Lamarche (the present owner, Nicole Lamarche s grandfather) by his uncle Edouard. This vineyard is sandwiched between the vineyards of La Romanée-Conti, La Romanée and Romanée-Saint-Vivant from the north, and La Tâche from the south, and shares the geology and exposition and occupies the same position on the slope with them. There is also no obvious difference in soil color, texture or composition between La Grande Rue and its neighbor s famed vineyards. Prior to the mid-thirties its wines sold as Romanée La Grande Rue. In 1959, Domaine Lamarche and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti decided to exchanged parcels including vines in Les Gaudichots ou La Tâche, La Grande Rue and Echézeaux. As a result, Domaine Lamarche added a net area of 8.75 ares of original vines from Les Gaudichots ou La Tâche and La Grande Rue to its existing holding of La Grande Rue. Until that exchange date, the grapes from all these parcels had been used in making La Tâche. The majority of this addition is an 8.03 ares (about 2 ouvrées) parcel centered in the middle of the slope of the vineyard, on the same latitude of the centers of the vineyards of La Tâche and la Romanée-Conti. According to the records at the domain, the vines planted on this parcel are still the original vines planted well before the exchange was done in By the end of this exchange La Grande Rue reached the size of 1.65 hectare, which it is today and a portion of ares ( hectares) out of it is part of the original Les Gaudichots vineyard. Although since the 1930 vintage all the produce from Les Gaudichots was declared and bottled as La Tâche (actually this practice was being used throughout much of the 19th century), the De Villaine family officially did the combination of La Tâche and Les Gaudichots after its final acquisition from the Comte Liger Belair family on August 31, This combination was further legitimized when the official classification was done in 1936 and it was classed as a Grand Cru by the CNAO (the Comité National des Appellations d Origine, predecessor of the current INAO). Nicole Lamarche joined her father in 2003 after acquiring her diploma in oenology and since 2007 has made the wines on her own. After taking over, she applied major changes in the domaine. The most significant of all is that since 2010 the vines are cultivated organically, and wine making is done organically. Horses plow the vineyards and the use of new oak for élevage is limited to 50% at most. Nathalie runs the commercial aspects of the domaine. In the 2014 vintage Nicole Lamarche decided to make an experiment and harvest, vinify and age the grapes coming from the vines of this unique 8.03 ares parcel separately from the ones originating from the rest of La Grande Rue vineyard. For this special cuvée and based on the very high quality of grapes produced by these very old vines, whole clusters are being used and the fermentation takes place in stainless steel cuves rather than in open wooden vats. As the results of this experiment were very convincing, this practice will be followed in future vintages, with a maximum production of two barrels per vintage.

5 La Grande Rue Cuvée 1959 Les premières mentions de La Grande Rue datent du XVème siècle. Elle a historiquement toujours été tenue en haute estime par les experts et les institutions liées au vin dès cette époque et n a cessé de l être depuis. Son histoire en tant que propriété de la famille Lamarche commence en Elle fut alors donnée en cadeau de mariage à Henri Lamarche (le grand-père de l actuelle propriétaire, Nicole Lamarche), par son oncle Edouard. Ce climat est pris en «sandwich» entre ceux de la Romanée-Conti, La Romanée et la Romanée-Saint-Vivant au nord et celle de La Tâche au sud. Elle partage avec eux la même géologie, la même exposition et la même situation sur le coteau. Il n y a aucune différence évidente en termes de couleur, de texture ou de composition du sol entre La Grande Rue et ses célèbres voisines. Avant le milieu des années trente, les vins qui en étaient issus étaient même vendus sous le nom de «Romanée La Grande Rue». En 1959 le Domaine Lamarche et le Domaine de la Romanée-Conti décidèrent d échanger certaines parcelles situées dans Les Gaudichots (Premier Cru de Vosne-Romanée dont certaines parcelles ont la possibilité d être intégrés dans le grand cru La Tâche), La Grande Rue et les Échézeaux. En conséquence le Domaine Lamarche a donc alors augmenté sa surface nette de 8,75 ares avec des vignes originellement situées dans Les Gaudichots (ou La Tâche) et dans la Grande Rue, leur addition résultant dans l actuel climat de la Grande Rue. La majorité de cet ajout est constitué d une parcelle de 8,03 ares (environ 2 ouvrées) située en plein milieu du coteau du climat, à la même latitude que le cœur de La Tâche et de la Romanée-Conti. D après les archives du domaine, les vignes de cette parcelle sont les mêmes que celles qui étaient originellement plantées, bien avant que l échange ne soit fait en A l issue de cette échange, la Grande Rue avait atteint sa taille actuelle, à savoir 1,65 hectare, dont une parcelle de 23,18 ares ( hectare) à l origine située dans les Gaudichots. Bien que depuis le millésime 1930 tous les vins produits à partir des vignes des Gaudichots sont déclarés et mis en bouteilles sous le nom de La Tâche (en fait cette pratique avait eu cours au long de presque tout le XIXème siècle), la famille De Villaine n effectua la complète fusion des Gaudichots et de La Tâche qu après l acquisition définitive de cette dernière à la suite du Domaine Comte Liger-Belair le 31 Août Cette fusion fut par la suite légitimée lorsque la classification officielle des Appellations d Origine Contrôlées fut entérinée et lorsque La Tâche intégrant les Gaudichots fut classée en Grand Cru par le CNAO (Comité National des Appellations d Origine, ancêtre de l actuel INAO). Nicole Lamarche a rejoint son père au Domaine François Lamarche en 2003 après avoir obtenu son diplôme en œnologie. Depuis 2007 elle vinifie seule l ensemble des crus du domaine. Depuis qu elle a pris les rênes, elle a effectué des changements majeurs, le plus significatif étant que depuis 2010 les vignes sont conduites en agriculture biologique, de même que la vinification. Les labours sont faits à cheval et l utilisation de bois neuf est limitée à 50% au maximum. En 2014, Nicole Lamarche a décidé d expérimenter le fait de vendanger, vinifier et élever les raisins provenant de la parcelle de 8.03 ares mentionnée plus haut à part du reste de la parcelle de La Grande Rue. Pour cette cuvée spéciale et du fait de la superbe qualité des raisins produits par ces très vieilles vignes, les raisins n ont pas été égrappés (vendange entière) et la fermentation a été faite en cuves inox plutôt qu en foudres en bois. Comme les résultats de cette «expérimentation» ont été très convaincants, cette pratique sera renouvelée dans les millésimes à venir qui le permettront, dans la limite de deux fûts par an.
