2 My Experience in Early CSK While I can vividly remember events happened over some 40 years ago, but can hardly remember what I did yesterday, it makes me wonder if I'm suffering from Alzheimer's disease. No matter, at least I can recall the funny stories that Liu Sir told us during Chinese history class because I was deeply attracted to his humorous style of teaching. In the testimonial written by Bro. Columba when I left CSK in 1974, he remarked that "James possesses a fine sense of humour and creates a happy and lively atmosphere among his fellow students". Certainly, this fine sense of humour continues to help me create a happy and lively atmosphere among my clients, colleagues and friends. I have to admit though, my sense of humour did not help my study. Before my family moved from Cheung Chau to Kowloon in 1969, I attended the only Chinese-language government secondary school on the Island. After the relocation, I was enrolled in CSK (the then La Salle Evening School) as a Form 2 student. It was hard to catch up and my first mid-term results were nothing to boost about: I ranked 35 out of a class of 42. One afternoon in my first year's final term, Miss Lai wrote the following poem on the black-board:- ( ). She did not explain the meaning of the poem, but my instinct was that she was referring the then La Salle Evening School to a crippled horse. If we failed, we could hardly get on the horse, or any other horse again. It was my awakening. I began to study really hard and pay attention to what the teachers taught us in class. To everyone's surprise, my results climbed to 11/42 in the final examinations, thus enabling me to move to the science class (Form 3A) in Distracted by the typical teenagers' obsessions - Parties, TV, ball games etc., Miss Lai's "golden words" slowly slipped away and my studies were losing ground. One day in Form 4, when the Form Master Mr. Daniel Chan returned my English dictation paper to me, he said "you could do better if you work harder". Believe it or not, it was this knock on my head that pushed me to study hard again and saved my grades from dropping further before I finished my secondary education. My HKCEE results were good enough to allow me to continue my matriculation study at CSK. My deepest regret goes to Ms Kwok form mistress of F.6A, one of the most responsible, diligent and devoted teachers in those days. I dropped Chemistry recklessly and spent most of the two matriculation years chasing girls at "Koon Wah Yuen" Library. Needless to say, my matriculation results were extremely poor and I was not even qualified to apply for the only two universities in Hong Kong. Fortunately, I also did the GCE "A" level exam and was able to get four subjects (including Chemistry) passed. When I collected my GCE results with my old classmates at the College, I met with Mr. B K Lee at the veranda outside the general office. He knew I felt a bit lost as to what I should do with my future, and asked me what my plan was. "GCE results, ", I replied. He gave me a steady gaze and offered me the following advice: " " I have kept this advice close to my heart ever since. I completed a three-year higher diploma course in surveying at the then HK Polytechnic, and joined the Civic Service upon graduation. I was committed to learning as much as I could in my job, and gave everything I did my best shot. My efforts paid off - I was promoted to senior building surveyor in the Buildings Department and earned a salary more than the Principal's remuneration at the age of 36. I subsequently quit the Civil Service and joined the private sector in At present, I am Senior Director, Head of the Building Consultancy Department (HK) at CBRE, the largest international real estate services firm. I manage a team of over 60 professional and technical staff. Finally, if the young teachers at CSK care to listen to an old man's advice, I would like to share my experience with them that it is easy to give advice to students (or subordinates), but it is a lot more difficult to earn their respect. You have to engage and support them outside of the classroom. And only if you are respected by your students, your words of wisdom will be taken in to help them develop into great characters as the future pillars of our society. 4 Thank you CSK Our alma mater is finally 40 th years old, Happy Birthday, CSK! This is John Lee who graduated Form 7 in 2003, and I feel honoured to have this opportunity dedicating this thank you note to CSK. People say secondary school-life is an important stage when a child establishes moral values, builds personal character and shapes into the person they become for the rest of the life. Indeed, CSK has inspired me a lot throughout my seven bright years. Growing with good teachers was what I cherished the most, as they really laid out the blueprint of my path ahead. Starting from Form 1E, our class mistress was a young fresh graduate majoring in English. As her first batch of students, I was impressed how innovative she taught English using extensive additional references from daily life. Compared with Liberal Studies in our compulsory curriculum today, I would say her approach was already quite revolutionary in late 90s. Moving onto Form 4, I was lucky to have Vice Principal, Mr. Law Chung Kuen, supervising our class. Not only he was passionate to hold additional Mathematics tutorials for us every Saturday mornings, his everyday formal dressing to school reflected his high expectations and dedication to work as well was also my proudest year competing at the Annual Hong Kong English Speech Festival for CSK and winning Second place in the end. Thanks to my personal coach, Ms. Fiona Lee, for her whole-hearted intensive after-school training at our back staircase. Since Form 4, I was already impressed by the strict discipline of our boys as a School Prefect, especially the mastermind who has been defending the honour behind the curtains for years. Under his influence, I chose to elect for the Headprefect in Form 6 and managed our Prefectorial Board under his leadership. Also as his Biology-stream pupil for four years, I was very impressed by his detailed and informative lectures; which established a concrete foundation and motivated me to major Biotechnology at The University of Hong Kong. Who is he? I guess all Boys in Red from the Millennium should know Mr. Or Chun Ching, our admirable Vice Principal at present. Thanks for your timeless support and guidance on my studies and career. If I had not joined CSKOBA as an Executive Committee member upon tertiary graduation, I could not have earned this chance, working under the same 40 th Anniversary Organising Committee (OC) with you, PTA, OBF, other elite alumni, as well as our top school management team for the past 2.5 years. As the Chairman of our OC, I am sure both you and I will wish our grand finale anniversary dinner a huge success! Valuable human resources is what I believe had brought CSK to its profound accomplishments for the past 40 years. I am confident our alma mater will continue to prosper and nurture numerous talented Boys in Red in the glamorous years to come. Lord, may our founder St. John Baptist De La Salle pray for us. 6 Inspiration from CSK CSK was the evening school of La Salle College. Some students in the early years simply mentioned La Salle when being asked what school they attended. Being a Prefect, Chinese newsletter editor, Scout leader, and Chairman of several CSK student organizations, I had more interaction with Principal Brother Eugene and many other teachers. These excellent educators worked tirelessly to create an excellent brand for CSK. At the end of my F7 year, most students simply referred to our school as CSK. I brought this up because the pioneer spirit in CSK taught me to keep going forward. Your humble beginning is not a determinant factor for you to succeed or to fail. Great things can be achieved if you work hard and put yourself together. You need to have faith in yourself just like our founding administrators and teachers had faith in CSK. If you believe in yourself, you can achieve great things. You do not have to be born with a silver spoon in your mouth to succeed. Your motivation is the key factor for you to make a difference in your life. Look at my example. I grew up in a public housing estate in one of the poorest neighborhoods in East Kowloon. CSK gave me great education and my late Chinese History teacher, Mrs. Lui, gave me great inspiration. When I came to the United States, my strong accent and the lack of money did not discourage me from going forward. I am now the first Asian American to serve in Colorado s 3 rd largest School District s Advisory Committee and my business was named the Retail Firm of the Year in Colorado. CSK gave me a chance to discover myself and my talents. It provided me guidelines and taught me the lessons of life and prepared me to overcome the obstacles to succeed. The education and the social interaction that I acquired change my life forever. Hate it or love it, CSK is an integral part of you forever. Happy 40 th Birthday, CSK!! 7 We are the Boys in Red Here we stand together Boys of Chan Sui Ki. Hail to thee, our Alma Mater, Strong in unity. Here in this song, we stand together, sharing the same prestige that we gain from our Alma Mater, our nourishing mother. In this very inspiring song, I proudly say, in my eight years college life in our school, I was prepared and equipped with knowledge, characters and CSK spirit through ups and downs, challenges and hardships as well as success and failures. CSK Boys are to live our lives in Never say die spirit, to fight our fights in red and brave and to hail our mother school with our integrity and achievements. We are the boys in red! Perhaps, this is the most influential statement to me in CSK. As our school song says, we are together. We are strong in unity. We are one in fellowship. This statement has encouraged me a lot and now it still has a great impact on my life. Remember when I was in Form 6, I participated in wide range of activities, from the Student Association to prefect, club committees, inter-school debate competitions, etc. Among all activities, the most remarking one is the summer camp organized by Youth Leaders Congress. Most of the participants are from different Brand-1 schools. Without doubt, most of them got an excellent results in C.E., some of them even got all As. First, I was grateful that I had a chance to join this camp. And then I was totally shocked and amazed that as a student who repeated in Form 1 and who only got 14 points in CE can be one of them. This 3-days camp was one of the most fantastic and marvelous experiences in my life. With leaderships and communication skills equipped in CSK, I find neither restrictions nor barriers to work with them in organizing different kinds of activities. Now I have graduated for two years. Although I was no longer in CSK, I keep all these precious memories in heart. As a former student in CSK and a student now studying abroad, I would like to share some of my feelings with you. First of all, it is always good to be open-minded. In a small city like Hong Kong, it is so easy to look at the world from our own point of view. Our own set of thinking is strong that we don t allow any other mindsets to interfere. I believe in most cases our perceptions and ways to solving problems are right. But I also believe that there are always better ways to the problems. And teachers are the ones that we can always count on. Don t think the teachers are dump, if they are dump, they won t be sitting here to teach you. No matter how bad you feel in class, don t solely point at the teacher. Remember you should carry your own responsibility in your study. On top of being open-minded, let me remind all of you that we are in school to pursue knowledge. When you step out of the frame of the education system in Hong Kong, you will find that we are in a sealed container. Things are fixed and never change. Nowadays, people still think that being promoted to Form 6 and then universities is the only way to success. Sadly, this concept is not only deeply planted in the older generation but also among us, who also have the same strong conviction because of the public exams. Because of this conviction, we start competing with each other in a bad way, in an expense of the precious friendships between one and other. Trust me, friendships built from high school is the most wonderful memories and relationships that help you go through different stages in your life. Don t make a deal to exchange your friendships with grades. It doesn t worth it! When you put your focus on pursuing knowledge, I bet you will get the most. Don t be contended with what the textbooks tell. Google it. You will discover a whole new world if you want to know more. In conclusion, let me conclude with a quote of John F. Kennedy.. Ask not what CSK can do for you, ask what you can do for CSK. -Why do we always ask more from our school? We ask for better teachers, better classmates, better facilities, but we never ask for a better me. Let s do something meaningful to give back to our school. 12 Take Pride in the Glorious History and Continue the Legacy I am William Sin, an old boy of 80s. Although I have left ALMA Mater for some 20 years. I always concern its progress and development those good old days, those glorious moments of CSKLSC. In retrospect, I found the happiest moments of my life were the years I spent in the college. I have a happy juvenile in CSKLSC. I always remember Bro. Eugene and Mr O Brien. They are great principal and teacher with great personality. Old boys in those days must have remembrance of the sternness of Bro. Eugene and the humour and wit of. Mr. O Brien. Those were the good old days which were so mellow and cogenial with ample reminiscences of victories of the college. Many of our old boys always like to compare us with LSC and DBS. Today, I have some answers to them. I have research some facts between CSKLSC and LSC and I have tabulated the facts as bellow. Since not all copies of LEOWISH and LASALLITE are available now. That is we are on a par with LSC. Consider LSC is the very best in H.K. It is needless to say CSKLSC is the top school in H.K. as well. Few people notice this fact, I wonder the teaching staff at that time recognized they have mature a group of stydents equally brilliant as La Salle College (Laugh). La Salle College is always proud of their academic proveless which they deserved. CSKLSC is no inferior to LSC in those years. Teaching staff at that time should proud of their success and achievement. We were so young a college yet we have indeed created a legacy and a legend. The force behind such achievement is a true Lasallian spirit. I notice that there is an ambiguous psychology among CSKLSC boys. Thy are not willing to accept they are La Salle. They strike for the name, our benefactor Chan Sui Ki while in their minds they know they are Lasallian. They are pondering to and fro. They are not happy with their identity, such an ambiguity. Bro. Thomas, principal of La Salle College, during his speech delivered to us in 2007, said When you drink the water, remember the source. In Chinese Yam Seui Sih Yuhn Bro. Thomas was correct. Like St. Joseph College precedes La Salle College, La Salle College precedes Chan Sui Ki(La Salle) College, we all have good fathers and we are good sons. CSKLSC boys ambiguity they lest people would conjecture they shadow the lights of La Salle. I want to give those boys an correct answer, do not ponder, your true identity is CSKLASALLIAN. You are the good boys of St. La Salle. Like a good St. Joseph Lasallian, like a good La Salle Lasallian, like a good CSKLASALLIAN. I cannot miss our glorious achievement in sports and extracurricular activities. CSKLSC is one time 1st runners up, a times 2nd runners-up in Omega Rose-bowl (Bauhinia Cup today) and throned 4 times the most progressive boys school in sports in H.K. Very often we are second to LSC and DBS. CSKLSC is among the best schools in sports in H.K. While of course in some occasion, we beat out LSC and DBS, our traditional rivals. Those are the glorious history of CSKLSC. In extra-curricular activities, we are the champion in some events. Not to mention a few like bridge, wargames science exhibition, debate My form master Amos Chan always like to quote, we only lost to the champion or eventual champion(laugh). Like in Chinese and English debate, Very often we were either lost in the final or knock our by the eventual champion. For example, in one year, we have captured King s and Queen Elizabeth II School, but we lost to the eventual champion Wah Yan College of that year. In another year, we lost only to St. Joseph the eventual champion as well. Of course, in some occasion we beat our LSC, DBS, King s, Queen s, Wah Yan in electronic quiz, orienteering, chess and became champion etc. I have spent some money in researching the above facts but it is worth spent (laugh). At last, but most importantly, I find our achievement in academic and sports slip in result years CSKLSC drops while LSC progresses drastically I feel sad for.that. Does this is the time to spur our boys ardor and consolidate their faith and loyalty to the college. Dear CSKLASALLIAN, you have a brilliant Lasallian spirit to inherit, do not let it intestate (laugh). Be dare to accept it, be coallant to take the challenge before you. Be a good comrade, be a bright Lasallian. Seek distinctions and credits in the examination halls, secure champion and banners in the sports field. Remember to smile, never say die, and you can bring back the glorious history of CSKLSC. 18 The one who devoted himself life-long for education Brother Lawrence Text/ Jacky Ho-yan Chan Photos/ Yiu Kin-man Brother Lawrence, who is currently the supervisor of Chan Sui Ki, has spent over 30 years for his service in Hong Kong. He thinks that a firm and kind relationship is the key to building up a good relationship among teachers and students. Taking this opportunity, we have conducted an interview for readers to better familiarize with him. Brother Lawrence was born in an Irish farming family in late 1920s. He ranks the ninth among his eleven brothers and sisters. The place he first met the La Salle Brothers was his secondary school, and he was deeply impressed by them. In 1949, he received a foundation training of religious study, and had some teacher training in London. After that, in 1951, he left his home country Ireland and started his service as a Catholic brother. His first place to serve is Penang in Malaysia. He taught Forms Two and Three students seven hours a day in subjects like English, Maths, History and Geography, therefore he had quite a long time to spend with his students every day. As he remembers, the interracial classes there include mostly Chinese, Thai, Indian and even some Eurasian people. During the interview, Brother Lawrence could still recall most of his students names in his very first class in Penang. In August 1958, he was asked to move to Hong Kong by the La Salle Brothers. He first started to work in La Salle College as a teacher. At that time, the co-working brothers were young and spend a lot of time with students for outdoor activities like playing football or tennis. Brother Lawrence remembers that Brother Eugene even brought his students to climb hills every two months. Five years later, Brother Lawrence retired and passed the principalship to Mr. Lee Bing-keung, and has agreed to remain as the supervisor of the school. Brother Lawrence said he misses those days where teachers could spend a lot of time with students a day. He thinks teachers should be able to know well about students. Nowadays, a student usually has to face teachers of different subjects, which makes teachers and students more apart from each other. He emphasized that responsibility is of vital importance because teachers should be capable of taking good care of the students development. In the years to come, Brother Lawrence would be retiring from his work and may return to Ireland. Being a part of CSK, we should all appreciate his devoted work for the Lord and be thankful to his service. Brother Lawrence furthered his studies in Economics, Geography and Archaeology in Dublin, Ireland and returned to Hong Kong in 1968 to help teach in St. Josephs College. Later, he transferred to Chong Gene Hang College to take up the position as the principal until In 1990, the principal of Chan Sui Ki, Brother Eugene, has reached the age of retirement and thought that he should give other people a chance to lead the school. Brother Lawrence was given the chance and has accepted the post because he thinks Brother Eugene is a nice person and admires him very much. Book Two One in Fellowship 33
