2 The emblem of the University is the mythical Chinese bird feng which has been regarded as the Bird of the South since the Han dynasty. It is a symbol of nobility, beauty, loyalty and majesty. The University colours are purple and gold, representing devotion and loyalty, and perseverance and resolution, respectively. The motto of the University is bo wen yue li, which means to broaden one s intellectual horizons and to keep within the bounds of propriety in choosing bo wen yue li as its motto, the University is laying equal emphasis on the intellectual and moral aspects of education.

4 Message from the Vice- Chancellor and President Message from the Vice-Chancellor and President 1963 I am delighted that you are considering The Chinese University of Hong Kong for your undergraduate studies. Founded in 1963 with a mission to combine tradition with modernity, and to bring together China and the West, the University has, since its founding, developed into an academic institution of international standing, well-known for its excellence in both teaching and research. One of the unique features of our University is its college system, which has helped to provide a supportive and nurturing environment for its students. Through its nine constituent colleges, you will participate in a wide range of college activities where you can interact closely with your teachers and peers, and benefit from the pastoral care and whole-person education that our colleges offer. Our undergraduate curriculum provides students with the flexibility to experience education in its broadest sense. You can pursue studies in your discipline of choice, expand your horizon through exploring General Education and other subjects, and take up opportunities for overseas exchange in a range of world-class institutions, internship in a workplace locally or abroad, as well as community and social service. The overall goal is to help you grow intellectually, develop appropriate skills and values, and prepare for further studies or a career in an ever-changing environment. The University believes in education without borders, and is home to a diverse campus community with faculty and students hail from some fifty countries and regions. 6 The University has been expanding continuously since In addition to the original Science and Arts Faculties, a Graduate School was established. Other milestones in the University s development include the Faculty of Medicine, established in 1981, and the Faculty of Engineering, established in The University currently has eight Faculties Arts, Business Administration, Education, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Science and Social Science providing 69 full-time undergraduate programmes. The 59 divisions of the Graduate School provide 35 doctoral programmes, 41 MPhil PhD programmes, 167 Master s programmes and 20 Postgraduate Diploma programmes. Introduction to the University The Chinese University of Hong Kong was established on 17 October 1963 when the government combined three private science and arts colleges New Asia College (founded in 1949), Chung Chi College (founded in 1951) and United College (founded in 1956) on the recommendation of the Fulton Report. The fourth constituent College, Shaw College, was founded in To further strengthen the collegiate system and to cater for the expected growth of the student population in 2012 as a result of the implementation of the new secondary school curriculum, five new Colleges, namely, Morningside College, S.H. Ho College, CW Chu College, Wu Yee Sun College and Lee Woo Sing College, have been established. At the time of the University s foundation, the three constituent Colleges were dispersed throughout Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories, which was inconvenient for both teaching and administration. Later, the University was allocated a 110-hectare plot of land that was connected to Chung Chi College. After seven to eight years of development, the buildings on the main campus and of New Asia College and United College were completed. Today, the Chinese University boasts a scenic campus set against a luxuriant mountain range and facing the sea. Since 1965, the University has established a number of research centres and units that allow academic staff and students to conduct basic and applied research. In 1968, the Publications Office (renamed The Chinese University Press in 1977) was set up to publish specialised books and journals of great academic merit to disseminate the valuable insights and research results of academics and experts. The University s governance structure is modelled on that of British Commonwealth universities, with a Vice-Chancellor as the head of the institution, a Senate as the highest academic authority and a University Council as the governing body. To prepare for future development, the University undertook a series of reforms in 1977 based on the second Fulton Report. The departments of the constituent Colleges were combined to form academic departments that were responsible for all subject-oriented teaching, whilst the Colleges themselves became responsible for all student-oriented teaching. The other functions of the Colleges were to implement general education and to promote extracurricular activities. The new system also increased the participation of senior academics in the University s administration and management. 4

7 A College System The Chinese University of Hong Kong is the only tertiary institution in Hong Kong that implements a college system to complement the academic education of its students. Under the pastoral care of its College Head, wardens, counselors and tutors, students are guided on their paths towards wholeperson development. Colleges are congenial communities with their own hostels, dining halls and other facilities. They are where students receive pastoral care and whole-person education, and offered exciting palettes with which to colour their university life, including overseas exchange, student visitor programmes, seminars, mentorship and community service programmes, and training in languages, IT and leadership. Extracurricular activities are also organized by the college student unions. The plethora of non-formal learning opportunities offered by the Colleges complement the formal curricula, nurture students interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity, and build up their confidence and sense of social responsibility. And scholarship and financial aid schemes are available to enable one to fully exploit the potential for personal growth. A College System Many CUHK graduates have quoted college life as among their best experiences at the University. College Assignment Each undergraduate of the University is assigned to a college. Students admitted will be asked to indicate their college preference on-line. Although students will be assigned college affiliations based on their preferences as far as possible, some may not be assigned to their most preferred colleges as there is a limited quota for each college. 5

8 Chung Chi College Motto: In Pursuit of Excellence A College System Chung Chi College was founded in October 1951 by representatives of Protestant churches in Hong Kong to meet the need for a local institution of higher learning that would be both Chinese and Christian. The College aims to provide further education in accordance with Christian traditions so that its students can develop an open-mindedness along with a thorough understanding and appreciation of both Western and Chinese cultures. It also aims to develop good analytical and problem-solving skills to meet challenges of the society. Between 1959 and 1963, the College received the bulk of its funds from the government. In 1963, the College was incorporated as one of the three colleges of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. It has a Divinity School for the training of Christian ministers and also a Chaplaincy Office to promote religious activities, including Sunday worship services and Christian fellowship programmes. To cultivate students leadership and organisational skills, Chung Chi College always encourages students to take part in extracurricular activities organised by various student bodies. Academic, cultural and social activities are regularly organised for both College students and staff. New Asia College Motto: Sincerity and Intelligence / New Asia College was founded in 1949 by Mr Ch ien Mu and a group of scholars from mainland China. New Asia College became one of the three constituent colleges of The Chinese University of Hong Kong in The College aims to preserve traditional Chinese culture, but to balance it with Western learning to allow students to understand their cultural heritage and cope with the challenges of the modern world. To encourage intercultural exchanges and broaden students exposure, New Asia College has established a number of exchange programmes with overseas institutions. To further enhance students Chinese and English language abilities, the College organises a wide range of language enhancement programmes and intensive training workshops on presentation and communication skills throughout the year.

9 United College Motto: Make One s Virtues Shine and Renew the People United College was founded in 1956 through the amalgamation of five colleges: Canton Overseas, Kwang Hsia, Wah Kiu, Wen Hua and the Ping Jing College of Accountancy. In 1957, United College was incorporated under an ordinance with a board of trustees as its governing body, and in 1963 became one of the founding colleges of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. In living up to its motto, Make One s Virtues Shine and Renew the People, United College strives to serve the people of Hong Kong, mainland China and the world through integrative education, pastoral care and the moral and spiritual enhancement of our students. United College places strong emphasis on whole-person education, broadening its students perspectives and enhancing their sense of social responsibility. A wide range of activities, Student Union and student interest groups are organised throughout the year. Participation in these diverse activities affords students with opportunities to develop and enhance their personal and social qualities. A College System Shaw College Motto: Cultivating One s Virtue and Going Deeply into What One Has Learned Shaw College was established in 1986 through the generosity of Sir Run Run Shaw, a world-renowned philanthropist who kindly accepted an invitation to become the patron of the College. The College motto, Xiude Jiangxue, is taken from a Confucian saying that highlights the cultivation of virtue and pursuit of knowledge. The College works hand-in-hand with student bodies to enrich campus life by organising a variety of activities. Annual large-scale student events include the Orientation Camp, the Shaw Lane evening bazaar, College Founder s Day celebrations and a singing contest Shaw Sing. Shaw College s student societies, ranging from sports clubs, departmental societies and general interest clubs to the Rotaract Club and Band Society, also present activities of their own design. 7

10 Morningside College Motto: Scholarship, Virtue, Service Morningside College was established in The College is distinguished by its commitment to service and intellectual inquiry, its distinctly international character and its highly participatory nature. Morningside is fully residential and accommodates 300 students. All Morningside students reside and take their meals at the College, where they are often joined by such distinguished visitors as historians, astrophysicists, and novelists and by College Fellows, who are engaged scholars and innovative teachers. Students meet them often at College events and join them at the Mentor-Mentee dinners held throughout the year. The Morningside student body is one of the most diverse in the University, with residents from a variety of countries and regions. A key characteristic of the College is the high degree of student participation in its affairs. Students are encouraged to be active builders, not merely consumers, of the College culture. A College System S.H. Ho College Motto: Culture, Morals, Devotion, Trustworthiness S.H. Ho College was established in Students admitted to S.H. Ho College do not simply enter university. They find a home away from home. Adopting a fully residential and communal dining system, the College is a true home for its 600 students. To create a congenial learning atmosphere, all undergraduates are required to live on campus and to dine with the Master and other College members three evenings each week. These two requirements are designed to foster education through living. S.H. Ho College takes its motto, Culture, Morals, Devotion, Trustworthiness, from the Analects of Confucius: The College aims to help students develop a refined appreciation of culture, high moral standards and a strong sense of responsibility and integrity. In line with the College s theme of harmony, local and nonlocal teachers and students form mentor-mentee teams. Mentors help mentees to adapt to university life and address their needs. 8

11 CW Chu College Motto: Cultus et Beneficentia Founded in 2007, CW Chu College is named after Dr. Chu Ching-wen, a prominent industrialist and remarkable philanthropist who spent the larger part of his career in Hong Kong. The University chose to perpetuate Dr. Chu s memory by naming a new college after him. CW Chu College is a small college with a student membership of approximately 300. The College seeks to strengthen the interaction between academics and students, raise students interest in intellectual dialogue, enhance their scope and depth of general knowledge, broaden their perspective on the world at large, foster in them a capacity for ethical reflection and conduct, and furnish them with the interpersonal skills needed for life after graduation. In doing so, the College aims to nurture graduates who embody the values exemplified by the late Dr. Chu, which are encapsulated in the College motto, Cultus et Beneficentia: leadership, service, intellectual clarity and ethical conduct. CW Chu College s small size and full residence and communal dining requirements constitute essential ingredients for building and fostering an intimate, interactive, congenial and caring community of students and academic staff. The College s small size allows it to nurture innovation by offering an alternative college experience. A College System WU YEE SUN COLLEGE Motto: Scholarship and Perseverance ,200 Wu Yee Sun College was established in 2007 and admits about 1,200 students in total. The College motto is Scholarship and Perseverance. In support of its mission of Entrepreneurial Spirit with Social Responsibility, the College has created an intimate and dynamic learning atmosphere. Its students develop a drive for social entrepreneurship: a passion for creativity and innovation, and acumen in pursuing new projects and ideas, not only for personal gain but also for the common good. Through its diverse programmes of general education, rich college student life, and numerous cultural and overseas exchanges opportunities, the College broadens students horizons (scholarship) and encourages them to forge ahead (perseverance) in making contributions to society and leading a productive and rewarding life. 9

12 Lee Woo Sing College Motto: Wisdom, Humanity, Integrity, Harmony ,200 Lee Woo Sing College was founded in It is a mediumsized college of 1,200 students, about half of whom are residential. In accordance with the College motto, Wisdom, Humanity, Integrity, Harmony, its aim is to develop leaders for Hong Kong, the mainland and the world. The College provides students with whole-person development opportunities through a series of general education courses, visiting scholar programmes, overseas exchange and other development programmes. Green life is one of the collegiate experiences for each student to be proud of, and promotes green education in various forms, including Green Ambassadors training, visits, workshops and other activities. The green measures include installation of Hong Kong s first hostel smart meter and high-efficiency CIGS solar energy system, etc. The beautiful campus is situated mid-level within the University and commands a tranquil view. It comprises buildings linked by a complex of communal student facilities. A College System 10

13 Teaching and Research Teaching Excellence CUHK boasts a galaxy of distinguished scholars and excellent researchers. It is the only university in Hong Kong staffed by Nobel laureates, a Fields medalist and a Turing Award winner. Many of its teachers received accolades from prestigious institutions. 15 Exchange Programmes The Chinese University of Hong Kong provides numerous opportunities for students to participate in student exchange programmes all over the world. CUHK established its first student exchange programme in 1965 with the University of California in the United States. Today, students can choose to participate in an exchange in more than 240 world-renowned institutions in 33 countries or regions. During the academic year, some 900 CUHK students participated in student exchange programmes for one term, one academic year or during the summer. In addition, many CUHK students took part in one of the short-term experiential learning activities arranged outside Hong Kong by the Colleges and academic departments throughout the academic year. CUHK welcomes students from partner institutions all over the world who study for one term, an entire academic year or during the summer, thereby meeting the University s commitment to internationalisation and goal of creating a culturally diversified campus. The Office of Academic Links offers students many opportunities to engage in cultural exchanges with these international students through study, shared accommodation and participation in a variety of activities. Every October, local and international students jointly organise an annual Student Exchange Week to celebrate the University s continued internationalisation and to promote its student exchange programmes. These opportunities allow CUHK students to gain proficiency in foreign languages, experience other cultures, share views on global issues and observe different learning styles. More than 1,500 international students came to CUHK during the academic year. 16 Pastoral Care Office of Student Affairs Pastoral Care The Chinese University of Hong Kong is committed to providing its students with a holistic and balanced education comprising both formal and non-formal elements. The formal element primarily constitutes academic pursuits, whilst the non-formal element encompasses non-academic and extracurricular activities and personal education. The aim of the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) is to facilitate the all-round personal development and growth of all CUHK students. OSA works with other functional units within the University and with external resources to provide a quality non-formal educational experience to our students. The goals are to meet students progressive needs and help them to realise their potential as they advance along their educational path at the University. To achieve its goals, the Office provides a wide range of services and programmes to students. Student Activities and Amenities OSA organises regular leadership development/training programmes for students, coordinates orientation and intervarsity activities, and liaises with and supports the University s student associations. OSA administers student amenities in various locations, including the University swimming pool. Services for Non-local Students To help non-local students to tackle adjustment and learning-related issues, OSA provides them with a learning enhancement service and provides off-campus housing information. The Office also promotes on-campus cultural diversity by organising a variety of activities. Student Counselling and Development Professional psychological counsellors provide counselling services for students who may be suffering from psychological, interpersonal or adjustment difficulties. Programmes and workshops designed to promote mental health and facilitate students psychosocial development are also regularly organised. 14

17 ICARE Social and Civic Engagement OSA supports the I.CARE Programme, which encourages students to care about and for society and strengthens their sense of civic duty. Career Planning and Development OSA is committed to providing career guidance and facilitating students career development. An off-shore internship programme is also organised every summer. Other Services OSA provides special services and facilities to students with disabilities to support their learning and campus life. It also conducts surveys of student profiles and graduates employment prospects. College Dean of Students Offices The Dean of Students Office of each college provides counselling and advice on interpersonal, psychological, financial and academic problems. These Offices also administer college scholarships and bursary awards and manage the student hostels. Further, they play a vital role in the provision of non-formal education and the enrichment of college life by organising a wide variety of student programmes and overseeing the execution of college-wide student activities. 18 Facilities and Service Units Facilities and Service Units (Blackboard Learn) 9,000 University Library System The System comprises the University Library and six other libraries the Elisabeth Luce Moore Library at Chung Chi College, the Ch ien Mu Library at New Asia College, the Wu Chung Multimedia Library at United College, the Li Ping Medical Library at the teaching hospital in Shatin, the Architecture Library and the Lee Quo Wei Law Library. With over 2.5 million print volumes, 4.3 million online books, more than 110,000 journal subscriptions and 750 databases, its collections reflect the bilingual and bicultural environment of the University. Information Technology Services Centre (ITSC) The ITSC provides a comprehensive range of IT infrastructure and services to facilitate the integration of information technology into almost every facet of university life. A onestop University portal offers access to the University Student Information System and a wide range of online services and campus information such as system. Through the portal, students can enroll in courses, view official grades, print transcripts, submit applications and make online payments. The ITSC offers an elearning System (Blackboard Learn), which allows students to access online learning materials, submit assignments, participate in class discussions and take quizzes. Hostel Places Campus life is an integral part of university education. Students can develop a healthy outlook in both mind and body by broadening their vision. There are a number of undergraduate and postgraduate hostels on campus, which provide some 9,000 hostel places. The hostel facilities include conference rooms, reading rooms, TV rooms, laundry rooms, kitchens, computer rooms, telephones, Wi-Fi, multi-purpose halls, music rooms and student canteens, etc. 16

19 Sports Facilities To promote student interest in physical activities, the University provides a wide range of sports facilities, including two sports fields, four gymnasia, a swimming pool, twelve tennis courts, six squash courts, eight fitness rooms and a Water Sports Centre. 1,500 Health Service The University Health Service provides on-campus medical, dental and health promotion services to full-time students and staff members and their dependants. The medical team includes eight physicians, five dental surgeons and a number of other allied health professionals. The health clinic is equipped with a minor operating theatre, dispensary, medical laboratory and physiotherapy unit to provide primary medical and dental care services. For specific or more serious medical conditions, the clinic arranges referrals to specialists. Culture and Arts The campus has a wide variety of facilities for artistic and cultural enjoyment. With a seating capacity of some 1500 and experienced house and backstage staff, Sir Run Run Shaw Hall is the University s largest professionally equipped auditorium. The Lee Hysan Concert Hall is one of the best venues in Asia in terms of acoustics for student performance. The University launched a Student Cultural Ambassador Scheme to provide subsidies for students wishing to attend performances and establish a platform on which they could share their experiences of the arts. The University also invites artists and critics to give talks on cultural issues from time to time. Facilities and Service Units 17

24 / Hilde Marie Moholth (Norway) Contemporary China Studies I have gone on a high school exchange to Hong Kong to study mechanical engineering for a year, and took a gap year to learn some Mandarin and Chinese martial art. It was a combination of these experiences that led me to apply for Contemporary China Studies at CUHK. I was thrilled when I learnt that I had been accepted! 22

28 Kent Ng (Malaysia) Laws I am always attracted by the cultural diversity in Hong Kong and I very much look forward to my studies here. Amazed by its good reputation and study environment, I did not hesitate to submit application to CUHK when my public exam result was released. Life in CUHK is much anticipated.
