20 Overview of and Outlook for Psychological Studies on Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition Members Tetsuya KAWABE (Osaka Prefecture University) Nobuo NARUIWA (Kyoto Koka Wemen s University) Tomo SHIGETA (Kyoto Bunkyo University) Reiji SASAKI (Kyushu University) Nanako KATO (Kyoto Bunkyo University) Asako SASAKI (Ritsumeikan University) Tomoko KUWABARA (Kyoto University) Giichiro OHNO (Tokatsu Hospital, National Institute of Polar Research) Kentaro WATANABE (National Institute of Polar Research) This paper reviews the psychological studies on the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE) members, identifies results of and problems with the studies, and discusses the future of psychological studies conducted on Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition members. A review of the literature on psychological research at Syowa Station reveals that seven psychological studies have been done so far (JARE 18, 28, 30, 32, 32 34, 45 49, 50 54). Psychological data gathered from Syowa Station, the main Japanese station in Antarctica, is considered to be unique because the station is isolated. Results of the studies suggest that the anxiety and depression of wintering members peak during midwinter and that personality traits of wintering members can change during midwinter. Studies also suggest that wintering members at Syowa Station experience winter-over syndrome but make progress towards salutogenic outcomes. 19
