12 No Vol. 33 ABSTRACTS Structuring Ritual Marker and Backward Observation from Now Three Keywords in the Study of Historical Anthropology in China Zhao Shiyu In the process of historical anthropological studies on Chinese society scholars have gradually put forward some concepts such as structuring by Helen Siu and Liu Zhiwei and ritual marker by David Faure which to some extent represents a sort of self-consciousness in scholarship. If we regard the structuring as the object of study the ritual marker as the entry point the term backward observation from now should be regarded as a certain methodology. Based on such self-consciousness in scholarship a new picture of Chinese history could be drawn. When History Approaches Anthropologists Review on Helen Siu s Tracing China A Forty Year Ethnographic Journey in South China Zhang Xiaojun Helen Siu a professor of Anthropology at Yale University distilled forty years of field research into a coherent personal narrative in book form. The book applies a perspective of historical anthropology to the study of South China. She used her field observations to illuminate key issues in anthropology history and literature such as culture history power place human agency and structuring. The review teased out the theoretical contributions of Siu s work by reviewing a dozen of her essays included in the book. It hopes to illustrate how Chinese anthropology and historical anthropology intertwine productively to impact a range of academic disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. Li Xuanbo and the Cultural Anthropological Orientation in Research on the Ancient History During the Republic of China Zhao Manhai Li Xuanbo was distinguished in the research of ancient Chinese history in the Republic of China. Li s historical views shifted from relying on archeology to cultural anthropology. The transition benefited from Li s accumulation of knowledge in the early years and the social scientific trend of historical research from the 1920s to the 1930s and the catalyst was the inspiration from translating ancient Greek and Roman social studies the knowledge of cultural anthropology on the primitive society contributed to interpreting some problems as the myths and legends rites of life societal organization kinship terminology and religious belief in the pre- Qin period. Li not only made theoretical explanations of the necessity and possibility of the reference to cultural anthropology and proposed some new ideas and replenishing new materials to the research on ancient history but also made a profound reflection on the limitation of the reference from the height of disciplinary construction. It will not only help to enrich our understanding of modern Chinese history but also bring profound enlightening significance for contemporary interdisciplinary research of historiography to explore Li Xuanbo s achievements in the reference to the knowledge of cultural anthropology on the occasion of the burgeoning of historical anthropology.
