3 P.2 P.3 JOCKEY CLUB NEW ARTS POWER FOREWORD BY CHAIRMAN Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC) cherishes the unique beauty of local arts and is devoted to the cultivation of creative talents. In recent years, HKADC has taken an active role in introducing outstanding local artists to the global art scene. ith their diversi ed media and styles, the artists works shone at overseas arts festivals and are well-received across different platforms. With the support of HKADC over the past few years, Hong Kong artists have showcased their works in the Performing Arts Market in Seoul (PAMS), Busan International Dance Market (BIDAM), Gwangju Biennale in Korea, internationale tanzmesse nrw in Düsseldorf, Germany, OzAsia Festival in Adelaide, Australia, Shenzhen Contemporary Theatre Biennale in China, Kuandu Arts Festival in Taipei and Hong Kong Music Series in London, United Kingdom. These international events allow overseas audience practitioners as well as the general public to enjoy the nest works of art that are proudly created in Hong Kong. Funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, these critically acclaimed works are returning to their birthplace, where they will be presented to the local audience at the second JOCKEY CLUB New Arts Power. The upcoming arts festival consists of 10 programmes, including music, theatre, xiqu, multimedia arts and contemporary dance. The artists, born and raised in Hong Kong, see their works as a means to communicate and correspond with their hometown. Apart from the original shows, the art groups in collaboration with the social welfare, academic and commercial sectors, will also put together over 150 community and school programmes, spreading the joy of art to people from different communities, and allowing art and life to enrich one another. Returning from their overseas tours, 12 local creative units will take turns to present their best works from September 2018 to January Engage in your artistic moments by joining the Festival, and indulge in this extraordinary cityscape! Hong Kong has developed a prosperous arts scene in the recent years. Apart from taking root locally, Hong Kong artists have illuminated the international art scene. Our homegrown creative talents have presented the city overseas in many inspiring and meritorious works of arts, embodying a unique Hong Kong perspective and touching the hearts of many. Shouldering the responsibility of the broad development of the arts in Hong Kong, Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC) strives relentlessly in supporting these artists to reach new heights. That includes facilitating artists to participate in international arts events, by means of grants or by our presentation, both broadening the horizon of our artistic talents through exchanges with international creative peers. In the past few years, HKADC has proactively brought Hong Kong artists to renowned international arts festivals and arts fairs. Participants include both established and emerging artists, creating a continuous ow of Hong Kong creativity. They not only contribute to the Hong Kong arts scene but have also gained wide international acclaim as I personally embrace. I am very grateful to The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust (the Jockey Club) that has made it possible for HKADC to present a large scale festival that brings these works back to Hong Kong to our local audience. They have formed a new arts power shining on the international stage. Sharing the common vision of connecting artists with Hong Kong citizens and supporting them in developing their outstanding new works, the Jockey Club has supported HKADC to implement a series of education and outreach activities to various communities so that people from all walks of life may participate in and enjoy the arts. 4 P.5 MESSAGE FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CHARITIES AND COMMUNITY OF THE HONG KONG JOCKEY CLUB The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust is proud once again to support Hong Kong Arts Development Council in presenting Jockey Club New Arts Power, so that we can celebrate the internationally acclaimed works and achievements of our home-grown artists with the Hong Kong community. For this second edition of Jockey Club New Arts Power, we have specially selected ten critically acclaimed programmes to attract a wider audience, ranging from music, xiqu and contemporary dance to theatrical performances and multimedia arts exhibitions, all proudly created in Hong Kong. The previous edition of Jockey Club New Arts Power attracted some 120,000 participants and saw over 160 community and school programme sessions organised in various districts across Hong Kong. As always, the Club is keen to share the pleasures of art with the widest possible range of audiences, and will continue supporting a variety of community and school programmes that permeates every corner of our city, making art accessible to all. The Club, which is one of the world s top ten charity donors, has designated Arts, Culture and Heritage as one of its strategic focus areas, alongside Youth, the Elderly and Sports. We are dedicated to building a culturally vibrant Hong Kong, enriching lives and promoting social inclusion. We also support cultural and heritage conservation. One of our key projects in this area is the revitalised Central Police Station Compound, operating as Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage and Arts, which provides an alluring new arts, culture and heritage space for all to enjoy. 5 P (FRI - SAT) 20: (SAT - SUN) 15:00 Cultural Activities Hall Sha Tin Town Hall $160 "Watching you, I see myself " Full of surprise and pain, Watching U is a moving yet intriguing love story which investigates into the meaning of real-self via an experimental study. The story tells a young philosophy student who leases his open-studio unit to a heartbroken young woman. Two strangers cross paths and a romance begins but is this really so? When the curtain unveils and the calculated lens focuses on each lover, a trial on the inner self has just begun. What is real? What is unreal? Can seeing really be believing? Cinematic Theatre continues their video aesthetics in live performance to explore the limits of contemporary theatre. PROGRAMME SHOWCASE P.7 CINEMATIC THEATRE Founded in 2002 by acclaimed director and playwright Ms Lo Ching-Man, Cinematic Theatre's name indicates that cinematic language takes an important role in shaping the theatrical style of the productions. It is a "multimedia theatre" which integrates videography and theatre language, and mainly focuses on original plays. Moreover, Cinematic Theatre takes the initiative to explore overseas cultural exchange opportunities. Since 2003, productions have been toured in Scotland, Australia, Japan, Seoul, the Philippines, Singapore and mainland China. In 2016, Watching U premiered in Hong Kong. Then it was staged at the Performing Arts Meeting in Yokohama (TPAM) and the Performing Arts Market in Seoul (PAMS) in cmtheatre.com

Fingerman, performed by the prodigal pianist KaJeng Wong, is an experimental piece for classical piano which explores the concept of God and takes every member of the audience on a journey of bewilderment and awe. Beloved Clara, adapted from the 2008 lm of the same name, tells the romantic life of pianist and composer Clara Schumann and her in uence on Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms, through piano, violin and soprano. Last but not least, SMASH is an enigmatic smashing together of pop, classical and jazz performed by pianist KaJeng Wong, harmonica player CY Leo and saxophonist Timothy Sun. The trio reshapes audiences perceptions of famous tunes across eras and genres. Combining all-time classics and original compositions, SMASH is a rethinking of music boundaries. Music Lab SMASH Founded in 2013, Music Lab believes in the value of performance, of its power to connect with people and its in uence by sharing ideas and thoughts. It values and promotes local artists who strive for artistic excellence and follow their passion. Serving as a collaborative platform, Music Lab unites artists and adds diversity to the city s arts scene by pouring old wine into new bottles. Dedicated to providing enriching concert experiences, Music Lab insists on the relevance of music to our society and intends to convey messages to our society via the exploration of societal issues and cultural meaning through their innovative productions. 8 WUJI ENSEMBLE 2003 Beyond the Senses PROGRAMME SHOWCASE P Artistic Director/ Composer Law Wing-fai Music Director/ Pipa Wuji in Chinese means boundless, endless and continuously evolving. Founded in 2003, the Ensemble is dedicated to exploring the realm of Chinese music to re ect the quintessence of oriental aesthetics, and creating a performing platform for local musicians to nurture artistic accomplishments. With the renowned composer Law Wing-fai as artistic director and Pipa soloist Wong Chi-ching as music director, together with a group of local musicians, the Ensemble constantly commissions new works as well as new arrangements of existing repertoires in Chinese and Western music, complemented with other theatrical elements. The Ensemble has actively organised and presented a variety of multi-media performances and activities, as well as participated in local and oversea arts festivals. The Taiwan, Beijing and Shanghai Sub-ensembles were also subsequently established, thereby further extending the Ensemble s artistic ideals beyond Hong Kong. Revolving around the natural timbres of Chinese musical instruments and coupled with poetry, songs, music, dance and various visual elements, it hopes to cultivate a mood for re ection as well as a taste of Oriental aesthetics. Eight musical sections developed through four facets of Hong Kong during the course of a virtual day: its cosmopolitan cityscape; fast-paced lifestyle; avenues for spiritual retreat; and colourful heritage and culture. Savour the changing sensibilities of the city in the ambience of video and instrumental music. With new scores written collaboratively by Fung Lam, the youngest Chinese composer to be commissioned by the BBC, and Teriver Cheung, a stand-out guitarist on the international jazz scene, and performed by the ne jazz quartet alongside top chamber players from the Hong Kong Contemporary Music Group, the refreshing jazz-classical cross-over piece is accompanied by architect Anthony Lai s original video images, the result is an amazing tapestry of original music and visuals weaving a lasting impression of Hong Kong. Hong Kong Episodes premiered at the World Cultures Festival 2015 presented by LCSD of Hong Kong, and showcased at Hong Kong Music Series in London in 2017 presented by HKADC. PROGRAMME SHOWCASE P /2014 My Nocturne Anthony Lai Fung Lam Teriver Cheung Lai received a Master of Architecture from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, recent completed buildings spread across Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Macau and Seoul. Through the media of video-graphic, his works explore the dialogue between city fabric and urban space. Recent works include Vertical Fabric Fantasy at Venice Architecture Biennale 2018, Play to Perform at Oi! in 2017, Kaleidoscopic City commissioned by Hong Kong Institute of Architects in 2016, and Hong Kong Episodes, a multimedia musical collaboration in One of Asia s top composers, Fung Lam "has a distinctive voice" (The Independent). Fung Lam holds the distinction of being the youngest Chinese composer (and the rst from Hong Kong) to be commissioned by the BBC, when, in 2007, he was invited to write a work for the BBC Concert Orchestra. With a focus primarily on orchestral composition, Lam nonetheless also collaborates in cross-disciplinary creations. He was appointed in 2013 as The Robert H.N. Ho Family Foundation Composer-in-Residence with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and currently the Director of Artistic Planning. Born in Hong Kong and studied music in New York, Teriver Cheung is a jazz guitarist. He studied at the University of North Texas with a scholarship and received Bachelors of Jazz Studies. Cheung released his rst solo album My Nocturne in 2012, receiving wide acclaim. In 2009, Cheung relocated to New York and has since played an active role in the jazz scene and collaborated with numerous famous musicians. In 2015, he returned to Hong Kong. In 2016, he performed with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. He is currently a guest lecturer for the Education University of Hong Kong. PROGRAMME SHOWCASE FACING THE FUTURE, WE TREASURE THE PAST Music in Anticlockwise Our steps are hurried, as is the wheel of time. Every forward movement happens like lightning. But what if we take a step back: perhaps we will see farther this way? That wrinkle in time before the future comes when we re ect on our past, a reminder not to forget. GayBird expands on his Music in Anticlockwise, shown in the OzAsia Festival 2017, to produce Another Music in Anticlockwise, a cross-media art experience interweaving media art, music performance and space design, deconstructing old contexts and creating new material; from the rst string quartet piece: Joseph Haydn s String Quartet Op. 1, evolving into a futuristic electronic sound experience. Using now as a time tunnel, we travel between the past and the future, contemplating on the constant and the inconstant. Home has always been intimately linked with our personal memories and emotions, but as migration becomes more frequent, and we no longer live in our birthplaces, Home has also changed its meaning. Cultures, the idea of family...all kinds of subtle and complex discussions nd way to the concept of home. GayBird believes that our constant need for home principally comes from our architectural space, instead of a wish to cultural supremacy by monuments, or a historical landmark for the in ux of tourists. Thus to the Hong Kong edition of his outdoor exhibition at the OzAsia Festival 2017 Home he adds a question mark: Home? Inviting audience to interact with the sound installation in various space, and to question the idea of home. Home? is inspired by the Chinese hieroglyphics (home). is composed of two parts, representing a roof and a pig respectively. In ancient China, pig rearing was a part of daily life, and a sign of a prosperous house. In modern Chinese,, when combined with other characters, refers to identity, careers, schools of thought, and even a formal address. The primitive connotation of has since led to complex relations, just as the nature of life itself. PROGRAMME SHOWCASE P.23 GAYBIRD GayBird graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and the City University of Hong Kong, specialising his research and creation in human control interface design, new media arts and the interactivity of live music performance with application of media technology. In recent years, he concentrates on creating media arts work, exploring the possibilities on relationship between sound, technology and visual arts. With his broad experience across different spheres, GayBird s works are beyond music just for listening, but a cohesive work combining visuals, mechanism, programming, craftsmanship and installation art, that could offer a comprehensive music experience. madebygaybird.com HOME 2017 First edition of the exhibition, HOME, was presented and premiered at the OzAsia Festival 2017 in collaboration with The Confucius Institute at the University of Adelaide and Art Gallery of South Australia. Hong Kong multimedia artist, sound artist and composer Samson Young takes Nocturne (2015) as a starting point to It s a Heaven Over There - an all new response performance through live radio broadcast. Nocturne is based on found video footages of night bombings collected from the internet. The artist uses Foley techniques to improvise an on-site performance with everyday household products, re-creating realistic sounds of explosions and gunshots, then broadcasting the mic'ed performance via FM radio transmission. The audience is invited to approach this alternative symphony directly in front of the action, or from a distance through FM airwaves. In It s a Heaven Over There, Young will invite friends on board his city-wide touring live broadcast van, to debate openly the notion of utopia through lenses of history, art, cinema and international relations. Pianist Geneva Fung will accompany the discussions with her harpsichord improvisation on-site. PHOTO CREDIT: DENNIS MAN WING LEUNG Samson Young is a highly regarded composer, sound and media artist based in Hong Kong, holding a PhD in Music Composition from Princeton University. With a formal cross-cultural training in music composition, he draws from multicultural paradigms to weave a symphony of image and sound, touching upon the recurring topics of identity, war and literature. Young is the member of multiple bands and has collaborated with orchestras worldwide. Apart from his home city, Young has held multiple solo and group exhibitions worldwide, including Hiroshima, Manchester, Sydney, Seattle, Seoul, Winterthur and others. He has also participated in multiple festivals, as well as been the recipient of several prizes. In 2013 he was awarded Artist of the Year by Hong Kong Arts Development Council. LET US EMBARK ON THIS TIMELESS JOURNEY, IN SEARCH OF THE MEANING OF MOTION. Maybe Tomorrow takes its inspiration from the myth of Sisyphus. Combining dance, music, environmental space, scenography and props motifs to explore the usual and unusual in the city, re ecting the fragments of life while engaging the audience into this timeless tomorrow to face up to the absurd, the insane, the joy Let us rethink; let us imagine all kinds of possibility to live and to be alive. Chloe Wong graduated from the Department of Contemporary Dance, Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. She was awarded a scholarship by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund to receive her master's degree jointly organised by the Hollins University and American Dance Festival. Wong s choreographies have been staged in Hong Kong and overseas. 17 P.30 ARTS IN COMMUNITY P THÉÂTRE DE LA FEUILLE After the public performance of Papa, Théâtre de la Feuille tours different district to visit 20 primary and secondary schools from September to December. Combining workshop, demostration and artist sharing, students are invited to experience the beauty of the non-verbal mask theatre. In the 2-hour session, students learn to appreciate the form of performance from different perspectives through a try-on experience of masks used in Papa. Conducted in groups and led by the performing actors, students are guided to discuss their feelings and thoughts after watching Papa, so as to encourage them to be open-minded and imaginative, and to connect arts experience with their daily life.
