J. S. Mill was the first one to elaborate the methodological principles of causal induction. The Millian principle of overall similarities for causal inference laid the foundation for Fisher s randomized experimental design and guided causal analyses in multivariate statistical modeling and qualitative comparative case studies. Causal theories are nothowever induced from empirical correlations. They are produced through leaps of faith and empirically tested through deductive logic. The best research strategy is triangulation that combines theorizing qualitative analysisand statistical modeling. On the Misusage and Adjustment of Household Members Matched Data A discussion with the paper Expansion of Higher Education and Inequality in Opportunity of Education Yang Ge & Wang Guangzhou 33 Abstract The data of household members matched are widely used in sociologydemography and related researchbut the selection bias of the matched data is often ignored. This paper uses the raw data of the Fifth Census in 2000 and 1% Population Sample Survey in 2005 to match three kinds of relationsi. e. father and sons mother and children husband and wifeand confirms that the selection bias exist in these matched data grouped by agegendermigration status rural and urban distributioneducationgeographical distributionand so on. Based on the matched data this paper re-tests the matched dataanalysis models and conclusions of the paper Expansion of Higher Education and Inequality in Opportunity of Education and finds out that the selection bias of matched data would influence the accuracy of model a- nalysis and research conclusion. For further reducing the impact of matched data biaswe propose two adjustment methods and find out that re-sampling and weighting methods can reduce the selective bias. 12 raised by Yang Ge and Wang Guangzhou Li Chunling 54 Abstract This article is the author s response to the questions raised by Yang Ge and Wang Guangzhou about selection bias of data used by the author s previous research. Based on discussion and data re-testing made by Yang and Wang about selection bias of reconstructed data from population sample database the author examines the effect of selection bias and evaluates the effectiveness of treatment methods. It concludes that effect of selection bias has not been verified by data re-testing. The treatment methods used by Yang and Wang could not estimate exactly the effect of selection bias and also not reduce its impact effectively. Power or Prestige The Debates and Verifications in Measurement of Social Capital Wei Jianwen & Zhao Yandong 64 Abstract The paper examines the differences between power and prestige in the light of the logic of social recognitionand further proposes that when measuring individual social capitaloccupational power score is a better instrument than the commonly used occupational prestige score. Based on a social survey data in three cities in China the paper finds that there are significant differences between occupational power scores and occupational prestige scores. Moreoveroccupational power score is better both in reliability and validity in measuring individual social capital than occupational prestige scores. Social CapitalFinancial Network and Inter-firm Risk Contagion Case studies from Zhejiang Province Wu BaoLi Zhengwei & Chi Renyong 84 Abstract The popular view portrays social capital as wholly beneficial with no significant downside. Based on case studies of Shaoxing and Taizhou in Zhejiang Province the paper explores the relationships between social capitalstructure of inter-firm financial network and inter-firm risk contagionand provides empirical evidence for the downside of social capital. It is suggested that the use of social capital is positively linked with the mean value of degree centrality in the financial network and leads to a less fragmented network structure. Moreover it results in a higher degree of network cohesion thus exacerbates the inter-firm contagion risk. Thereforethis paper attempts to propose a theoretical explanation for the risk contagion in Chinese real e- conomy from the perspective of social capital.
