SOCIOLOGICAL STUDIES (Bimonthly) 2008 4 Vol. 23 July, 2008 PAPER The Changing Chinese Model of Economic Development and the Institutional Perspectives in Economic Sociology Gao Bai 1 Abstract: Institutionalism is one of the most influential perspectives in American economic sociology. It resists the pre2given,exogenous assumption of rationality adopted by economics and the rational choice theory,rejects their methodological individualism,and abolishes their pursuit of grand theorizing, advocating the development of the middle2 range theories. Institutionalism in economic sociology has three important research directions :it emphasizes the social construction of rationality,stressing the role of cognition in this process ; it regards state building and market building as a mutually interactive, undividable process and maintains that the state is both an actor and a structure and it affects the economic life in important ways ;it also highlights the role played by non2market governance structures. When the process of globalization reverses its course, these three research directions can provide unique angles for us to study the changes in the Chinese model of economic development. The Southeast and the Southwest : Searching for the connections between academic regions Wang Mingming 32 Abstract : This article examines two existing academic regions in Chinese anthropology : the Southeastern and Southwestern models of anthropology. The author points out that the bifurcation of Southeastern complex of communities, lineages, markets, and folk religions and Southwestern ways of being ethnic has created a serious problem for the anthropology of Chinese civilization. He also argues that to further internal understandings of either region, it is necessary to think externally to bring external relationships into internal structures. The author has written extensively on sinological anthropology and ethnology as well as Chinese social science in general. In this context, he criticizes anthropologies in China and abroad of their common negligence of the relationships which have played important roles in the configuration of the regions under the empire2turned nation.
