in Fictions Liu Yongqiang Chinese Department, Peking University, Beijing 100871, China Abstract Eastern Capital (Kaifeng), is regarded as the social settings for vernacular fiction in Song and Yuan Dynasties, as well as the first city completely showing urban style and features in ancient Chinese novels. In vernacular fictions in Song and Yuan Dynasty, works with Eastern Capital as settings composed a series. Eastern Capital has space-time significance in narrative: as fictional settings, Eastern Capital isassociated with specific time and space, which are designed for arrangement of plots and figures. Due to different perspectives of different genres, there are evident dissimilarities between Classical Chinese and vernacular fiction, even though they took the same city as settings. Compared with historical materials and classical Chinese fictions, description of Eastern Capital in vernacular fictions also have some defects. Eastern Capital image constructed in vernacular fictions both in Song and Yuan dynasties reflects the proceeding of literary transition during that period, exceeding any other cities that have ever been mentioned in previous fictions. Along with the southward resettlement of Northern Song regime, the political status of Eastern Capital declined drastically with its economic development falling behind other cities in the southeast, therefore, the image of Eastern Capital gradually faded from the artistic world of Chinese fictions.
