Patient Education Foods for Sick Days For people with diabetes Finding foods that you can eat or drink when you are sick can be hard. This handout for people with diabetes suggests some foods that can replace your usual foods on those days when you are sick. Basic Sick Day Rules Continue to take your insulin or diabetes medicine. Test your blood glucose often, at least 4 times a day. Test your urine for ketones if you have type 1 diabetes. If your blood glucose is 250 mg/dl or below, eat your normal amount of carbohydrate. If your blood glucose is above 250 mg/dl, eat half your normal amount of carbohydrate. Drink lots of fluids at least 8 cups a day. Call your doctor if: - Your blood glucose stays above 250 mg/dl for 24 hours. - You have ketones in your urine. - You cannot keep fluids down. If you cannot eat regular foods, try some soft or liquid foods. The tables on the next 2 pages will help you choose the foods with the right amount of carbohydrates, calories, and carbohydrate choices for your meal plan. You will see some foods on the list that you usually avoid. Remember that on a sick day, these take the place of your usual foods. Everyone s taste is different during illness.
