44 Si Mang, Ching and His Sexual Kingdom within His Courtyard Ching-Su Lin Department of Lecturer of Applied Chinese, Wenzao College of Modern Languages Abstract The Chinese society is built upon ethical structure. Ethical morality sets up the mode for individual behaviors as well as human relationship. Si Mang Ching, the male protagonist in Chin Ping May, goes astray from the ethical moral structure in mainstream Confusianism society. He builds a sexual kingdom with himself as the power center, and he upsets the hierarchy of intimacy in ethical relationship. He threatens the conventional social structure by abusing his wealth and social political power to pursue his insatiable sexual desire. This thesis attempts to investigate the characteristics of Si Mang Ching s sexual kingdom, the various functions of Si s wife and concubines, and the psychological needs that prompt Si s unconventional behavior. As a result, I discover two basic tunes in Si s inner world that are contradictory to each other. In this contradiction lies the very root of Si s conflict with the mainstream society, and the conflict leads to his final destruction. Key words: Chin Ping May, Si Mang Ching, sexual kingdom
